As my CT read the story she would stop after every page to write down either a character trait, feeling, action or description. She would model the four square on a poster and the kids were able to copy what she put down in their own writer's journals. She would read a page or a sentence and she would have the class think, pair, share. Below is a good visual example of the character four square.

I thought this lesson was simple and clear for the students to learn and understand what their learning through listening and writing. Metacognition and comprehension play a big role in this lesson. The students are thinking about their thinking and they were having to comprehend their reading to pick character topics out of the text.
