"Never Shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never Shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all entirety of the desire to live"(34).The quote that I choose shows figurative language and shows the theme how easy and fast it is to loose your faith and hope.

The inscription above the gates of Auschwitz says "work will set you free" in German. This shows irony because they are prisoners and they will work most likely till they die. No matter what they would not be set free even if they did work. Also, the work there was not easy so most of them would die working or become to weak to work and when they became to weak they would most likely be killed.

"For the first time I felt anger within me"(33).The quote shows how the concentration camp can change people. The quote shows how the main character had felt angry for the first time which means the concentration start to make you angry and want to give up hope. It shows how fast you can change in a matter of days or even weeks as well. Overall, the main character had changed a little from this.

My reaction to them not listening to the other when they said the Germans would invade and they would be transported away. I believe that this is crazy on how the Jews just kept carrying on life as it was normal. Also, I believe they should have listened to the people trying to tell them how they were going to get transported, but they just ignored them. My reaction to this is that they were stubborn for not listening and when they got transported away they should have listened before and they could have avoid this whole thing.

"I did not fast. First of all, to please m father who had forbidden me to do so. And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against him"(69). This quote really stands out because it is showing how he is loosing his faith in God because he was loosing it. Also, he started to loose his faith which was going against the advise that they were told at the very beginning.

"I was no longer with my father"(69). This quote stands out to me. The reason is because Elie and his father have now been separated. At the beginning when they arrived to the first camp other prisoners gave them advice to stick together and not be separated from each other. Also, now since they were apart from each other it probably caused more stress wondering if the other was still alive and going to make it.

"Around the middle of January, my right foot began to swell from the cold. I could not stand on it"(78). This kind of was a scary situation because if there was nothing they could do for him he would most likely be sent to the crematoria. Also, this meant he had to stay in the hospital and there was a lot more selection there then outside. As well as him facing the fear what if he never seen his father again because his father was working while he was stuck in the hospital waiting for his leg to rest.

The decisions that were made between the characters could have saved there life. The reason is because Elie and his father got to the camp and they had a selection and his father was going to the left and Eli was going the other way. So, he created commotion and confused them which allowed his father to switch lines with him.

"I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last"(112). This quote is important because it shows how Elie did not have enough strength to cry even though his father had died. Also,it explains even though his father has died he was free from the hell that they were going through. He believed maybe it was a better place for him then him having to suffer, even though Elie was sad.

"I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since my fathers death, nothing mattered to me anymore"(113). This quote is very important because it shows how he has lost his hope and will to live. This is huge because he had just started to regain his hope, but since his father died it did not matter to him. Hope is probably the only ting had kept him going, and now he had lost it right near the very end.

"From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me.The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me"(115). This quote is very important because it is the first time he has seen himself since this all started. Also, it shows how much he had changed over the years even though it was a short period of years. Elies eyes had changed him forever because of everything that he had witnessed, also his physical appearance had changed. All in all, his views on life had changed and he had became a lot more thankful to be alive and learned lots of lessons.
