His first impression of his aunts house is that it is large. Since Kek was always on the move and had a small house that he lived in, he thinks a house with multiple rooms is a kingdom.

As Kek is seeing his aunt’s apartment for the first time, he suddenly has a memory moment of Ganwar playing with his brother, acting like wild boys chasing each other like lion and prey, searching out mischief in every corner of their village. Why do you think the author chose to include that memory moment in the story? 

I think it explains more about the relationship Kek and his family had with Ganwar and his aunt. It shows that they were friends. I think that the author chose this to include was because you can see the realtionships. 

3. What do you think Kek meant when he said, “It’s a strange pain to be with those you belong to and feel you don’t belong?”

I think he meant that you have family, immediate and others. When he is not in h is home, his enviorment, with his immediate family who knows him so well, he feels out of place. Why do you think the author chose to include that memory moment in the story. I think the author put this in the story because it shows how much Kek and his brother played with each other and how strong their relationship was.

What do you think Kek meant when he said, “It’s a strange pain to be with those you belong to and feel you don’t belong?”  I think he meant that he belongs to his mother and father and brother, not to his aunt!

  I think Kek's first impressions of his aunts apartment is how big it is, he calls it a castle. He also may think it's so big because when he lived in Africa he didn't have suchy a big house.

I think the author included this a memory moment because the reader needs to see how Kek feels about his family. Kek moving in with his aunt and Ganwar is a big change for kek to be moving to a totally new place.

Kek feels that his aunt's apartment is HUGE, "like a kingdom", even though it's just an apartment. He feels this way because his people were always on the move, and when they did build a house they were very small, probably just a few rooms, because they weren't staying there too long.

I think it's to show how much Kek and what's left of his family have lost, and how happy and nice it used to be before war came to their homes.

Kek feels out of place because he hasn't been in America long, and Ganwar and his mother have, and have at least become somewhat accustomed to America, and their apartment. Kek feels out of place also, because his aunt reminds him of his mother, whom he has yet to see, and his cousin Ganwar reminds him of his brother, Lual.
