Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and it is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus, which comes in two forms: HSV-1 (usually oral) and HSV-2 (usually genitals). The most common symptoms are painful blisters or sores on the mouth, genitals, or surrounding areas. Some symptoms are not visible which is why so many people are unaware that they are infected. The virus is highly contagious and spreads through skin to skin contact. If pregnant it can be very dangerous for the newborn during birth, potentially causing infections, brain damage and even death. Due to these risks doctors usually recommend C- Section delivery. While their is no cure for herpes, it is usually managed with antiviral medications that reduce outbreaks and the risks of giving it to others. Practicing safe sex and being aware of symptoms can help prevent the spread of herpes to others. Raising more awareness and reducing the stigma of herpes is also important.
