Individuals & Groups
Many ordinary people, across all countries of Europe, showed courage in helping the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. Most of these individuals went undocumented and they were not rewarded; nevertheless, these brave heroes helped by providing hiding places, false papers, food, clothing, money, contact with the outside world, underground escape routes and sometimes even weapons. If caught the gentiles could be tortured, executed, deported or put in concentration camps.

Mass Rescues
Spectacular  mass rescues  also occurred,  for example, the Swedish rescue of Danish Jews in October 1943 saved more than 7,000 lives. Similar rescue operations also occurred in Italian occupied Greece, where they would smuggle Jews into neutral Turkey . Similar popular aide for the Jews occurred in Holland, Finland, and even in the Italian army. Partisians, or resistance groups helped as well. In Yugoslavia, Serbian partisans attacked a concentration camp in 1941, freeing a small number of Jews; the Belgian resistance helped several hundred Jewish deportees escape Nazi persecution during the course of the War. Perhaps the most unusual case of gentile aide for the Jewish occurred in the Bialystok ghetto, where several anti-Nazi German and Austrian soldiers were sentenced to death for smuggling weapons and wireless sets to the Jewish resistance.


Religious Responses

Despite the Vatican failure to act, many priests, nuns, and laymen hid Jews in monasteries, convents, schools, and hospitals and protected them with false baptismal certificates. Some clergymen went to great lengths to protect the Jews' education and their right of their beliefs. Catholic, Protestant, Quaker, and Unitarian relief organizations cooperated with the Catholic church in France to rescue 12,000 Jewish children; they arranged safehouses and smuggled small numbers into Switzerland and Spain.I n addition to active help, many clergymen also protested the mistreatment and deportations of Jews as violations of divine and human laws.

More than 300,000 Jewish people were transferred from Warsaw to Treblinka. Word got back to Warsaw of a mass murder. Because of this, a surviving group of young people formed an organization called the Z.O.B (for the polish name Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa, which means Jewish Fighting Organization), led by Mordecai Anielewicz. in January 1943, Warsaw ghetto fighters fired upon German troops, who eventually retreated. Jew workers degraded it by hammering screws into the machine rather than using screwdrivers. While prisoners in the camps were getting prepared for armed resistance they faced many difficult problems . The angry Jews who worked in these areas slowed down their work or even did a bad job to get "revenge" on the Nazis who put them to work.
