Kids will have major difficulty learning online if they do not know how to use the platforms and devices they are working on. They should learn skills such as:

- Using the keyboard
-Using the mouse
-Working the microphone and video
-How to type
-Searching and switching tabs
-How to log on to school used websites
-How to navigate school websites

For skills like these, it may be beneficial to create screen casts and post them for the disposal of students and family. This way, students who are stuck can refer back to the video for a crash course on how to navigate online learning

Technology issues are sometimes out of our control, but all students, parents, and guardians should have the tools and resources to help prevent and fix problems as soon as they arise. First as a teacher, make sure that every family has contact information of the technology services in the school. Most of the time if the teacher or parent does not have the answer to a question, the IT department does. Also there should be an information guide on how to handle the devices when they are acting up. This guide should include force shutdown, force quick, restart, virus protection, etc.

Limit Distractions

Its inevitable that students will be distracted when learning from home with all their toys, siblings, and family surrounding them. Its important for families to understand that kids should have a designated space for school work, where they won't be distracted. In some cases this wont be feasible, but certain measure can be taken to limit distractions. Recommend having the student wear headphones to limit sound exposure, especially if theres another sibling in a nearby area doing work online as well. Try to have all other technology such as radios, TV, phones, or tablets off beside the device being used for classes. As a teacher, its also important for students to stay muted when needed. With multiple people speaking at once, even if its a family member in the background, it will be distracting for the students in the classroom. Our goal is to have as much attention on the lesson on the screen as possible.

One of the most important aspects of childhood education is the social-emotional and peer based learning. Students were eager to go to school for the human connection and friendships that were made in person. Its important to not loose this factor of schooling as it is one of the most enticing aspects of the classroom. Make sure to foster time into the day to let students bond, speak, and make connections between one another. This can be done in breakout groups, all about me sharing, group activities, and much more. Be creative and support these online friendships and conversations.
