We were taught how to ask about a location of a particular object as well as how to answer those questions if we were asked by another person.

My thoughts on this week's lesson is that it is really interesting and pretty much important as it is applicable in daily conversation.

I have learned and applied the skills of decision making through scheduling my classes. Since coursera is an online platform, I get to determine my own learning schedule for the week. I have made a decision to attend the class 3 times a week and it was made through analysing how many topics that i need to cover and how it can be fit into my EP timeframe.

How I managed my time throughout the EP is basically based on my weekly goals that I have set earlier which is to attend 3 classes a week. Therefore, I will make sure to make time for those sessions.

My plan for next week is to continue my simple dictionary that I have started as well as preparing the video for the EP submission.

Week 3 of Crocheting My Life Together! 🧶

An-Nawal IsaBelle Farissa Binti Ismail Faizal
A174007
7/8/22

My progress

At the end of week 3, I’ve kept true to my intentions from the previous week and continued to practice crocheting and just create more. In fact, by the end of the week, I’ve started on 7 new projects and completed most of them! I’ve created three new coasters and an adorable hat for my cat. I learnt a new technique to add ruffles with crochet when I was learning to make the coaster, which I then applied to the bandana that I’ve crocheted last week. I also have a jewellery holder and a tote bag on the way! Unfortunately I miscalculated the amount of yarn I needed to complete last week’s drawstring pouch and I ran out just as I was about to finish the bag. Nonetheless I’ve ordered more and I can’t wait to finish this piece to add to my collection!

My feelings and thoughts

I definitely feel a sense of satisfaction when crocheting especially when I get to finish a project. I’m also proud of my progress because I can definitely see improvement in my work. For example, I’ve remade the flower coaster from Week 2 and I personally can see that the stitches of the new one are tighter and neater, the flower petals’ shape are also more symmetrical in this remade version. I also remade the love shaped coaster as I’m not entirely satisfied with it on my first try as you can observe in the picture I shared. I’m glad I could notice the imperfections of my creations, learn from it and then improve on my upcoming work.

How I learnt and apply decision making skills in my EP journey

I learnt how to make decisions right at the get go of this posting- I had to choose which projects I wanted to take on, I had to decide on the colour scheme I wanted for each creation, I had to filter through multiple shops taking into consideration the type of yarn, costs and shipping time before I decided to purchase anything for my project, and I had to decide what time of day I wanted to allocate for my project to suit everyone best, because realistically I have to take into consideration my other responsibilities especially now that I’m staying with my family. Albeit it not being a life or death decision, knowing how fussy of a person I am when it comes to making the smallest of decisions such as picking out a yarn colour, I would like to think I’ve applied and sharpened my decision making skills through this posting.

My time management throughout this EP journey.

I have specifically allocated time to crochet in my every day schedule. Since I’ve already set a duration of time everyday for crocheting, I just had to commit to it, which of course came with its own challenges. To be transparent, there are times where I had to shuffle my schedule because it clashed with my other commitments at home, but I’ll still hold on to my rule to at least crochet a little rather than abandoning it completely for the day. So at the end of the day, there’s always progress- little or big. Personally, I’m happy with the decision I made to learn to crochet for this posting, its something enjoyable to me so managing my time for it was not the biggest obstacle.

My plans for Week 4

My plan for the final week is to again crochet and crochet some more! I plan to finish my ongoing projects which are the drawstring pouch and jewellery holder. I of course also have to start on my video presentation as we’re nearing the end of this posting. I’m also excited to start on my first amigurumi, which is basically a plushie or a teddy bear. I plan on making a larger sized amigurumi instead of a keychain sized one so we'll see how that turns out!

3rd week of learning Mandarin

Amriit Kaur a/p Sarjit Singh
A173451
7/08/2022

2. Your progress so far

This week the theme was on 'shopping'. I learnt everyday simple statements, such as telling the time, temperature, making choices when shopping, and personal likes and dislikes. The main focus this week was on the grammar and the vocabulary. I learnt to tell many new words. I learnt to tell the dates of today (Jīntiān) and tomorrow (Míngtiān). I also learnt to tell how I am feeling, whether it is hot, cold or feeling just fine.

The last 2 weeks my main concern was regarding the pronunciation and now I feel like I have gotten the hang of it, it may not be perfect but I see the progress.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

Mandarin is actually a very technical language especially when I compare to English, Malay, Punjabi and even Hindi. Sometimes I feel like it is a tongue twister because the words don't just roll of my tongue. It personally takes a lot of effort for me to pronounce these words. This is the very reason that makes this language unique. I truly feel like I am getting the idea and the hang around the Mandarin language.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

The main reason why I chose to learn this language was because of the apparent language barrier among patients who only spoke Mandarin in the wards. Every time I would approach them I would need someone, who would be my groupmate to be my translator. This happened far too often and I know that there will come a time where I will not have a 'translator'.
Not only that it is the most spoken language in the world, by more than a billion people; so really there is no disadvantage in my choice .I am also very fond of languages so adding another language to my set of skills would really become a future asset.
I have learnt to apply the skill of decision-making in my elective posting journey by seeing a constant problem I faced and learning the language in hopes to solve the problem that I had.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
My elective posting is only 4 weeks long but my course is 6 weeks long, I have followed the schedule for weeks 1,2 and 3 and the reason I did so was because I did not want to overwhelm myself with too much information. I wanted to take my time and adjust and get used to the language. I would say that now I am more comfortable and able to grasp new words with much more ease. In the next week I will complete the remaining.

It was also challenging because at the same time I have other commitments. Initially for the first couple of days I found it hard to manage my time but I eventually got used to it. Thankfully it is fully online so it becomes so much more easier and accessible.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
My plan is to complete the remaining tasks and hopefully come out from this elective posting being able to make small conversations with friends and hopefully my patients in the future. The learning objective states that I will be learning numbers. Although I already know how to count from 1-10 in mandarin, I am still excited to know how to count after 10.

Week 3 of My Korean Language Learning Journey!

Name: Yiew Yee Hann
Matric No.: A173428
Date: 7/8/2022

2. Your progress so far

This week I learned about food and description about personalities and appearance. For food, I've learned about how to ask for permission and vocabulary to introduce any food or restaurant to the others. For personalities and appearance, I've learned new words like bright, outgoing and something about hairstyle. It makes me easier to describe someone when I would like to introduce the person to the others.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I actually felt quite overwhelming this week because there's a lot of study points to remember. Korean is easy but if you want to advance in it, you need to take a lot of effort to be good in it. However, I'm also happy to get to improve my grammar and pronunciation when speaking Korean.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

The skill of decision making that I apply firstly in this EP journey is choosing the project that I would like to take for EP. I've think of learning Korean for a very long time however I didn't get a chance before this, so when I know we have EP for us to learn anything we want, I decided to go for it. Next, there're actually different levels and different universities offer Korean learning course on the website Coursera, so I need to decide which to choose. At the end of it, I chose the intermediate level Korean learning course offered by Sungkyunkwan University.

5. How did you manage your time throughput this EP journey?

My course is 6 weeks long however we only have 4 weeks to complete our elective postings. So, I planned to have week 3 and week 4's lessons to be done in week 3 and week 5 and week 6's lessons to be done in week 4. So, I have at least 3 days to complete each week's contents and luckily, I managed to follow my plan and hopefully everything will be fine in the following week which is the last week of our EP.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

My plan for the next week which is the last week of our EP is to complete week 5 and week 6's lessons. For next week, I'll be learning about consideration, mistakes, appreciation and consolation which can helps me to communicate with Korean speakers that I can pass on my thoughts better. I would also like to recap everything to enhance all the study points that I've learned. I hope I can see a great improvement in myself at the end of this EP no matter in Korean speaking, confidence or decision-making.

Week 3 of Baking

1. Your name, matric number, date

Aberame A/P Suseenthiran, A174059, 4/8/2022

2. Your progress so far

For this week, I have made a butter pound cake. The cake turned out scrumptious. Besides researching for the recipe, I also studied a little on the history and origin of pound cakes. Pound cakes can be traced back to Northern Europe for as early as the 18th century. Not only that, an interesting fact about the pound cake is that it gets its name from the ingredient ratio that was used back in the day, which required one pound of each core ingredients (flour, butter, sugar and eggs). Of course, in today’s setting the ingredients have been modified to make the cake taste much better than how it used to be.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

Although in the beginning I chose baking as my elective posting to mainly improve my skills, I have a newfound appreciation for this art. Understanding the history and origin for this recipe has made baking more interesting and insightful. I am excited to do more research into age old recipes and follow through to see recent modern takes that have been incorporated into time-honoured recipes.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Baking has been extremely therapeutic for me and it would have been otherwise if I hadn’t prepared and pre-made every decision beforehand. Before diving into making a dessert, I make sure I have done copious amounts of research and scour the internet for tips and hacks. This is to ensure I make an informed decision when modifying the recipes. Not only that, since baking is relatively time consuming, I have allocate enough time for both experimenting and finalising a certain recipe to make use of my time as wisely as possible. This means I decide on which tasks require the most attention and finish it off before moving to less important ones.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

As fore mentioned, baking is time consuming. To maximize the use of each hour, I prioritise and allocate enough time for each subset of a recipe. For example, a batch of cookie dough has to be frozen for an hour before baking and cooled for 10 minutes after baking. Instead of just sitting around and waiting, I use the resting and cooling time to do the other parts of the recipe like preparing the frosting and cleaning.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For week 4, I plan on making cream cheese tarts from a recipe that I have curated and bake a cake for my sibling’s birthday. I also will be completing my video and work on my recipe book.

Eomma = mother, abeoji = father, nam dongsaeng = younger brother, yeo dongsaeng= younger sister, oppa = older brother (for female), unnie = older sister (for female), hyung = older brother (for male), nuna = older sister (for male). I have also learnt how to count in Korean; hana=1 , dul=2 , set=3. Myeong means people, so if we want to say 2 people it is going to be 'du myeong' and 'se myeong' means 3 people.

Your feelings and thoughts
I feel encouraged learning Korean throughout the sessions. The instructor was always supportive and patient, she always gave encouraging words so I don't feel pressured learning it.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
The decision making was required during the quiz session. I have to complete the sentences given and it required the reading and grammar skill to ace the quiz. Thus, the practice given by the instructor helped me to find the correct answer.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I made a time table specifically for my elective posting so it won't disturb my other plans.

Your plan for next week (Week 4)
In week 4, I will learn how to ask and respond time and date using Korean numbers.

Hi,,,my name is Sanjay Ramesh (A175051)
Date: 10/8/2022
Day:Wednesday

2. So far i have completed the third section of my course which is about humility and in this section there were 5 minor quizzes and i have completed all. There were 3 video assignment which i have done and it gave me more understanding on what is humility in a conversation and how it can make me a better leader in a group and a better listener as a person. The quizzes were personally challenging but yet i have done justice to it.🎉🎉🎉

3. I honestly feel completely humbled by the idea of how communication is supposed to be in a group and how people react to it.I also feel extremely intrigued of all the minor things that were discussed under this section,so i did a bit of reading on my own, which really was an eye opener. For example,i learnt the truth of humble listening.I am also surprised to find out how much I actually needed this course (I honestly thought i was good at talking 😂😂😂)

4. The skill of decision making was used during answering all the quizzes because mist of them are based on common sense and also things from the reading materials.I have practice on how I communicate with other around me based on the current knowledge that i have on courage, humility and also empowerment. This has always made me to really be present in a conversation and i think based on the criteria even before saying something small, but can bring a huge change to the idea or conversation or action.

5. I realised my time management is bad as i am not a very disciplined person (judging from my assessment due😂😂).I have made a time table to make sure i completely my work smoothly rather than rushing everything in the last minute (there might be abit of over exaggeration here😅😅).But at the end of the week all are done and i am still working on being a better person i terms of managing time.

6. Next week (actually its this week🤣🤣) is going to be all about accountability and it will be the last section for the whole course and i have already started it and making great progress. Finally need to start on the video and also the essay✌🏼✌🏼

Teoh Hui Jing, A173923, 7/8/2022

Your progress so far
I think I progress well as I started to challenge multiple basic songs. Week 3 is tougher for me in terms of consistency as I spent lesser time on guitar compared to week 1 and week 2. Nevertheless, I pick up a habit of 10 minutes to half an hour a day after dinner, consistently, to ensure that I will not be forgetting the chords that I have learnt. It is quite challenging to maintain the habit since the freshness and excitement of playing guitar declined with time, and outing with friends are appealing, but I try my best to keep up with it. Besides, I also try to sing and play guitar simultaneously. I am a little shy to sing haha

Your feelings and thoughts
I am happy with my evolution from plucking strings for some basic chords to shifting chords naturally. I am also proud of myself for gaining the muscle memory in chords shifting. I truly enjoy the process of challenging a new skill and I have gained a lot of satisfaction from it! I think that the time and effort invested in learning new item are truly rewarding.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Decision making skills are learnt when I faced challenges in learning guitar. The first challenge, which is finger sore, led me to learn about deciding a good resting gap for finger recovery. Besides, decision making skills are also applied when I have to train myself to be consistent in planning learning schedule. I have to plan and decide carefully how much I can learn in every week and progress in a smooth way. Decision making is also important in the sense of deciding what to do in my elective posting month. The decision of learning guitar was made due to my dream of learning second instrument besides piano. I think guitar is a good choice since it is beginner friendly and the price for a guitar is not as expensive as other musical instrument. I think that I have made a goof decision.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I made a mindset of practicing in a short duration but in a frequent way. Besides, I make it as a habit to play guitar everyday after dinner. I would make sure that playing guitar isn't time consuming or too burden for me. Time management is very important in learning guitar, and I think that I managed to arrange time nicely.

Your plan for next week (Week 4)
I would like to work on my guitar recording and I will start to choose a suitable song as a guitar cover for my video submission. Besides, I will continue to learn other songs that I like too. I planned to cover some minor chords too. (Major chords are the one frequently used in contemporary songs)
