It is called ‘temperate’ because temperate means ‘not extreme’ or ‘moderate’. In this case, ‘temperate’ refers to the average temperature in a temperate forest. The temperate forest biome has many different types, which are named and distinguished for the types of trees in the forest:

  • Coniferous - These forests are made up mostly of conifer trees such as FIR and pine trees. These trees grow needles instead of leaves and have cones instead of flowers.

  • Broad-leafed - These forests are made up of broad-leafed trees such as oak, maple, walnut and chestnut trees. These trees have leaves that change colour in the autumn and change to green again in the summer and spring.

  • Mixed - This is exactly what it sounds like!
The temperate forest is what you normally are thinking of when you are thinking about "woods".

Soil is good for plants and even some animals because it has hidden nutrients (still do not eat it though, that is just disgusting) for plants and animals to eat. Plants get the nutrients from their roots. I do not know how animals eat the nutrients because I do not even know if animals eat nutrients from soil or not.
