I feel like in gen bio they really make a point to say that everything about a protein's function is reliant on it's shape. It made me think of in class when it was mentioned that we're really only seeing something from one singular perspective when using microscopes, and how we base a lot of truths that we get from that. That made me wonder how many other functions of proteins we just don't know about because maybe we aren't able to see it's shape fully from different perspectives.

Today in class we discussed how the different tools and perspectives through which we view life shape our realities. I thought this article offered an interesting example of the way the quality of a microscope can affect what is able to be seen through them, which can shape the user's fundamental understanding of the way the world is constructed. It also offers a social example of reality not aligning with appearance.

We talked briefly about magic versus science during out discussion of Corpuscularianism and ways we can define each term: "magic" as divine incorporation in the world and marveling at God, whereas "science" is a modern term and tool to understand what the world is. It's interesting to see how theology and science are both tools to "understand what the world is." Perhaps the line between science and theology is not as concrete as we are led to believe, if using this definition of science.

Talking about Bacon's four different idols made me wonder what types of scientific bias still exists today in a more modern context. When I was looking at this article, something that caught my eye was this thing called Gray literature bias. It's basically when people are defending their theses for their PhD, they tend to use smaller or statistically insignificant effects.

It's frustrating though because we would also consider that maybe we were dreaming of ourselves doing that confirmation test.

Seeing this (quite darling) Peanuts comic made me think about Descartes's wax metaphor--Lucy finds Schroeder to be cute because he is cute, not because he has certain qualities/properties that make him cute. Similarly, Descartes notes that wax is wax because it is wax, not because of its ability to melt, hard-like texture, or amber color. Descartes reminds us to be skeptical of our senses as they change (misinform) our perception of the world.

This meme made me think of our discussion of Locke's state of nature with the absence of a centralized government and property rights. We talked about an "anything goes" attitude under Locke's state of nature, and this meme has Lockean ideals of freedom/natural rights as "minding your business is free." The broke part is just funny, but maybe Locke would argue that people need to cultivate the land to expand one's private property and therefore, gain wealth.

I linked an article describing the architecture in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as future president Snow's classroom closely resembles the anatomical theaters we discussed in class. The article explains that the movie's sets are intentionally influenced by various time periods, such as Germany during WWII or a 1960s game show, to displace its watchers and make the audience realize that we will live in a dystopian society if we do not learn from history. The classroom is in a "Federalist-stye tempietto," like the anatomical theaters that displayed dissections--maybe the enjoyment of watching animal dissections is also dystopian...

Our class discussion on some of Newton's major contributions--optics, absolute space, and interrupted force--reminded me of the cast of Wicked's response to an interviewer telling them that people are "holding space for 'Defying Gravity.'" Although it is unclear what the interviewer meant by "holding space" for the song, Erivo and Grande went along with it just as Christians in 17th century England followed Newton's message that God is present in absolute space. Perhaps Newton was holding space for Christians and modified his argument to include them as a result of people's fear in atheism.

This meme reminded me of our discussion on Duhemian underdetermination and the realization that intermediary conditions can impact conclusions. From my understanding, Duhemian Underdetermination is the rejection of quickly denying that hypotheses are false, but that the conditions to prove the hypothesis to be true was set up incorrectly (or in a way that would not facilitate a desired product). Gibby's encouragement to not give up reminds us that our hypotheses may be right, but that the conditions are not set up the "right" way; we do not always have to take no for an answer!
