For those of you who did not have the honor of knowing Courtney, she was diagnosed with cancer the first week of high school. She was a tough athlete who earned a starting spot on her high school soccer team despite going through treatment for her glyoblastoma. She graduated from Canandaigua Academy and came to William Smith. Courtney passed away in October 2015. She texted me from saga that fall saying she wishes I was still there and that there’s an empty seat next to her that she saved for me. A simple text that a couple months later felt even more powerful when she passed away after a valiant fight with cancer. I’ve always thought about that “empty seat” and how, as a member of WS Soccer, we were always taught to pull up another chair to include another person, someone we may know well or someone we should get to know better. Whether it be our tour guide in Barcelona, our hosts’ son in San Antonio, Courtney’s twin brothers and twin sisters, parents of the program and so on, AA always taught us to make more room at the table for more voices, more discussion, more ideas, more love, more competitive minds. So on this giving day I think about the herons in saga, leaving a seat open for a teammate, a coach, a future heron, a parent, a mentor, a friend to sit in and experience what it means to be a part of the Heron Soccer program.
