With that era coming to an end after the events of the Civil War, there was a new fear amongst white southerners which is being called "Negro Supremacy" in the article below. The article describes a reflective and insightful look on how white people got to the point they were at; a future that may possibly be ruled by black individuals. This hindsight view is evident in the last line of the first paragraph, "is it an adroit expression of a result for which the whites can only properly blame themselves"? This fear of "negro supremacy" is something that would make white people do what they can do within the law to maintain their status as "superior".  One such move is to silence their voices and opinions, which is what is being done "A Problem in "White Supremacy"". The minority white voters were discounting the black votes, which was the vast majority of the population. This was a political move done to keep the majority blacks down and under the thumb of white views and laws. "Negro Supremacy" alludes  to this as well, but it is pointed out that this strategy is mainly used in areas where the majority is black. This is a fragile "wall" made to hold black African Americans with respect to the fact that a mass majority can only be repressed for so long. This barrier is not one that is sustainable and in those areas where the whites are majority but refuse to vote, the growth of black political influence is their own fault. When African Americans disobeyed their white masters or broke any rules their white masters would use violence as a type of punishment. African Americans votes would get immediately discarded. As time progressed violence has been used less frequently and tactics started to switch from beatings and intimidation to trying to keep African Americans ignorant and out of the voting system. The northern states did not have such a massive case of voter fraud one way or another. The South however, did. Several states including South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, etc, had admitted in the past to various strategies in order to discount the votes of black citizens. These were not acts of violence for the sake of blood. The KU Klux Klan were an evil cabal of people that wished for nothing more than to maintain white supremacy in America. Now that black people were freed from the shackles of slavery, they needed to try and keep the old order of things alive. No matter what deplorable actions they performed upon the black community, their resolve held firm. The black community, through sheer determination and perseverance for equality, were able to be better than their oppressors, take the crimes against them in stride and prove themselves to be exemplary human beings. And with their citizenship, they strove to make America a place where all people were equal. The old tactics of force would not work. There were African American voting citizens who were making real change in America. New tactics were being used to simply push out African Americans from the political process altogether. One such event occurred in South Carolina's Constitutional Convention in 1895. Looking upon voting numbers in the previous decades, one could see that votes overall had dropped a significant amount. But still, white favored legislation was being passed. One might conclude that black citizens simply aren't voting, whether through lack of participation or lack of information.  The true case, however, was that of corruption to the core. The truth behind why there weren't so many votes was that only white voters were allowed in the convention. Of course, black voters could still vote against the legislation, but conveniently, the legislation only needed the white votes to be passed and votes against would be discounted. It was estimated that black voters held the majority of 120,000 to the white 80,000. Only 65,000 votes were needed to be passed. This was an exemplary case of the transition from forcing black people to not vote to simply discarding their rights as citizens. A black man could work his fingers to the bone to provide for his family, rise up, earn enough to live above his means for the first time in his life. But if he lived in the South, his vote might as well have never existed in the first place. He lived in the United States. But he did not have the rights of a citizen. Black people were no longer a threat to become a part of society. They were there. So now the Pandora's Box of equality had been opened, and white oppressors needed to do everything they could to stem the growth. Segregation was nationwide. People of the same means, in the same employment were treated radically different just because of their skin color. Multiple states were engaged in various degrees of voting fraud, anywhere from changing actual voting statistics to outright admitting to not allowing black people to vote. The nation was divided, similar to what it was before the civil war.
