I often run into issues where students do not know how to reflect appropriately.

I also struggle with having students work in groups as some don't put in similar effort, even when that effort looks differently.

Sometimes administration prefers a different type / style of learning theory, this causes them to see constructivist approaches to be less than effective or a sign of 'lazy' teaching.

Education and Collaboration

All individuals in the school setting should be told about the importance of the different learning theories. I also think that teachers should be encouraged to collaborate with each other more instead of it being shut down by administration or other parties.

I teach science for my class and one block per week for another grade 6/7 class. Their capacities for constructivist approaches and active learning activities are wildly different. The majority of my class is able to participate productively in collaborative activities (as long as they are engaged in the topic or the format). Some need more support than others, but they have made progress over the course of the year. With breaks in between work times, they can stay focused and productive. That is NOT the case with the other class. Their social emotional and social skills are much less developed, and they struggle to collaborate positively or productively. The majority require support to start tasks and to be on task in collaborative settings at all, and their attention span for any type of learning activity is 6-8 minutes. This makes it very difficult on the teacher, who is planning activities, gathering resources to design the learning experience, and managing and supporting students.

I think sheer class size and volume of content to cover in a short period of time make using a constructivist approach challenging.

Having smaller groups prepare content and teach it to the rest of learners helps with applying constructivist approaches in larger groups. Like this virtual conference :-)
