Ben Ratliff defines closeness by saying it is "two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination." Closeness, to me, is an extremely important aspect to music that isn't always noticeable unless there is a live performance or maybe in a music video. Ratliff talks about the coordination between musicians and their instruments to create a unique and powerful combination. This subtle difference in closeness can make a performance even more enjoyable if done correctly.

Ratliff's Argument

Ratliff talks about the combinations of two singers, singing in slightly different pitches to create resonance, like what can be done with certain instruments that are paired in the same way. They compliment each other and can allow the performer to display more emotion to their listeners. Ratliff says, "Sometimes the closeness of two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits." I completely agree because for someone who appreciates metal, the consistent combinations of bass and drums, two that really set the rhythm for the band to follow, and the guitar paired with a vocalist, which is also a prominent duo that really brings the sound to the forefront of our senses, is truly highlighted by closeness. The bass feeds off of the drummer while linking the drums to the rest of the instruments through balancing tones. It is also used frequently by paired guitarists that play slightly different pitches at the same time, combined with each of their sounds coming from different speakers, allowing them to create these magical riffs.

I used this live performance as an example because not only does it show the closeness of the combined vocals of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but it also shows the effects of that powerful duo. If you listen carefully, you can hear the difference in the pitch.

This song is highlighted by the powerful riffs created by Tosin Abasi where he and his rhythm guitarist Javier flow back and forth from playing together (but slightly different), then split apart to play their separate but necessary parts of the song.
