Short Bio of yourself - 60-100 words; why did you choose this particular book?

One reason why I chose to read this particular book is because I have heard great remarks about the T.V. show that is based on this book. I have only seen the first couple episodes of the T.V. show and was interested in how the two compare. I wanted to get Piper Kerman's full perspective on her life in a women's prison facility and know all of the small details that may not seem important to others, but important to her. I was interested in how Piper Kerman would be able to accomplish such an in depth story into only 295 pages, while including all the details about her life in a women's prison. Also, the way that Piper Kerman would tell the whole story, so that the reader could fully follow and comprehend the events also intrigued me to read this memoir.

I thought this was a great attention grabber at the beginning of the novel, then going into who she is and where she is from in the next paragraphs. Right away, the reader can get a sense of who she is, while foreshadowing why she ended up in jail (smuggling a bag of drug money).

This quote follows one of the main themes throughout the novel, which is freedom and confinement. The fact that she is excited about having two bathrooms to choose from, shows how little freedom there is in prison and how the smallest privileges can not be taken for granted. When someone goes to prison, a lot of their freedoms are taken away and this is something Piper needs to durastically adjust to throughout the novel.

The Special Housing Unit is one of the worst punishments in prison. This quote is able to show that if you even just break one rule, then you would end up in this worst place. Piper learns to adjust to all of the new rules that she needs to take on when she went to prison. Throughout the whole novel, more and more rules keep coming up, which makes the reader remember them, as to saying them all at once, which is a very good strategy by Piper Kerman.

"I would have scoffed at the idea that the "War on Drugs" was anything but a joke. I would have argued that the government's drug laws were best proven ineffectual every day and at worst were misguidedly focused on supply rather than demand, randomly conceived and unevenly and unfairly enforced based on race and class, and thus intellectually and morally bankrupt. And those things all were true" (180).

She had been so used to giving up her freedom and not being able to do as she pleased, and she knew that as she was leaving the prison, no one could stop her from running. I feel like the last line is really able to wrap-up the book great and gives closure not only to the reader, but also hopefully to Piper.
