In 2022, Amanda Zurawski's life had been put at risk due to Texas' anti-abortion policies. Zurawski was 18 weeks pregnant when her water broke before the expected time. Due to this pre-term rupture, Zurawski no longer had a chance for a proper birth and she additionally experienced greater risk of health problems.

Doctors insisted that they wait until her condition got even worse as a few days passed and she developed sepsis (a blood infection that can be fatal). It was only when it reached that point where doctors were finally allowed to perform an emergency abortion.

This decision had long-term effects for Zurawski as she developed sepsis again and the infections caused one of her fallopian tubes to close up permanently. Zurawski now advocates for abortion rights as a campaign surrogate.
