Abu Simbel is a site of two temples that was built by the Egyptian king Ramses II. The great temple stands at 98 feet high and 115 feet long. At the entrance stands 4 seated statues depicting Ramses on his throne. Beneath the giant statues are smaller ones depicting Ramses's conquered enemies. Others statues represent his family members and gods. The structures were created, at least in part, to celebrate Ramses victory over the Hittites, the battle of Kadesh in 1274 BCE.
