I took this picture of my two younger brothers because it was a very rare moment to see my middle brother be affectionate with our younger brother. Growing up in a Hispanic household, , my brother Anthony was raised very alpha male which meant that he had to become very masculine at a young age and follow my fathers footsteps as the man of the house. Seeing him interact with our brother who is the same sex and actually be a little affectionate towards him is something I don’t see very often. With alpha masculine men, they believe that any type of affection threatens their masculinity.

This little princess here is my little cousin. I took this picture of her on first day of high school earlier this year. As you can see, she is wearing a hoodie and jeans. My aunt wanted her to wear a dress or something more girl fitted to meet society’s expectations of what a girl should wear. My cousin is very free spirited and doesn’t look for validation of others and doesn’t want to fit into society’s norms. She’s always been like this since a young age. You can say that she doesn’t follow the norms of what a girl should be doing or how she should dress. There are people in society who would look at this picture and get offended as to why a girl isn’t wear what a girl should be wearing. Yet again, this little girl will grow to become her own person instead of letting society choose for her.

I took this picture last night at the target in my neighborhood. When I saw it I instantly knew I had to take a picture of it not just for this project but also to remind that the LGBTQ community is more stronger than ever. It’s great to see that big brand stores such as target are supporting this community and exposing people to this knowledge. Many in society tend to hide away from things like this and try to bring criticism into it which it shouldn’t be that way. For every holiday of the year or themes of the year, stores always put out things relating to it, so why cant their community do the same to celebrate?

This picture is important because it shows that society has started to become more open and accepting of allowing men to wear colors that aren’t strictly for men. Such as the color pink. People still tend to criticize men for wearing colors that society says that shouldn’t be wearing. It’s as if colors have rules and if we don’t follow the color rules, there would be consequences which is obnoxious and not true. Fashion and clothes should be something that people especially men are proud of wearing. Many still fear of wearing colors like these and say “pink isnt for men” when in reality it doesn’t matter what color people wear, if it did we would all be in shame.

I took this picture of my significant other and I the other day. I know it may look like just a picture of hand holding but it to me, it shows that alpha masculinity that my boyfriend has. He is a hispanic alpha male. Grew up in a tough neighborhood with an alpha household. All of his siblings are men so he obtained the alpha at a very young age. He is affectionate and sweet towards me regardless of where we are and who we are around. It goes to show that yes, he is an alpha male but he doesn’t let that stop him from showing he cares in front of society. I would say that he fits under the hegemonic masculinity but does lack some of the components of it. Over all, men can have hegemonic masculinity without having to pretend to be someone they’re not.
