Frankenstein

 

-      The film was released in 1931 (the book in 1818) 

-      It still remains until today, 90 years later no other version became more iconic like that one. 

-      It even beat Dracula in the Universal award

-      This film was considered one of the best of the XX century as it has a very deep meaning, were it touches every aspect of humanity- mind, body, heart and soul.

-         The story of Frankenstein begins with the protagonist, Victor Frankenstein, and his journey to creating his monster from dead corpses. 

-         The reason we all know the infamous Frankenstein is the first film adaptation of the novel by Thomas Edison in 1910. 

-         The story of Frankenstein has gone through much history, but Mary Shelley herself has some interesting history. One dark and stormy night Mary Shelley, her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, their friend Lord Byron and Lord Byron’s physician, John Polidori, were all traveling when they all got caught inside due to the weather. To entertain one another they stayed inside and told ghost stories to each other. This inspired the group to write their own stories. Percy Shelley and Lord Byron would not finish their stories; however, Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein and Polidori wrote the also significant novel, The Vampyre. 

-Mary Shelley knew the advice given by medical practitioners for the recovery of persons drowned, hanged, or strangled.

-A year before marry Shelley had published her book,……Karl August Weinhold conducted a brain removing experiment on a kitten in 1817. 

-He had replaced the kitten’s brain with zinc and silver, which created a battery.

-The experiment explored the idea that electricity was key to animal life and that the dead could possibly come back to life.

-According to Weinhold his kitten “opened its eyes, looked straight ahead with a glazed expression… hobbled about and then fell down exhausted.

-In Mary Shelley's novel, the scientist creates the ‘monster’  from old body parts, strange chemicals, and a spark that gives him life. It had the same concept of electricity bringing life.

-Author Sharon Ruston also thinks that Shelley was inspired by the scientist Giovanni Aldini who put electrical currents through corpses.

-It was said that the corpses sat up and even opened their eyes. 

 -Frankenstein’s horrified reaction to his ‘Creature’ waking up “was similar to Aldini’s attempts to bring back George Forster” who was a man that got hanged for murdering his wife and child in 1803.

-Walton and the men with him see a sledge with a gigantic creature who guided some dogs (one is seen as dead).

-after some convincing from Walton, the man boards the ship.

-the man is weak and is starving.

-they nurse him for a few more days.

Chapter 2:

This chapter introduces us to Henry Clerval, a close friend of Victor, and the story of how Caroline, his mum, passes away. In this chapter, we are also informed about the old tree that burns and shatters by their front porch.

Chapter 3:

This is the chapter where Victor Frankenstein, now a man in his early 20s interested in biology and looking for education, arrives at Ingolstadt University and recounts his feelings about it.

 

Victor Frankenstein, a normal boy, son of Caroline and Alphonse. His mother always dreamed of a daughter, and so, one day they did. They were walking on the streets of Geneva, when they heard that a girl, an orphan of two nobles, was all alone, and so, they offered to take her home. Elizabeth was really sweet and everyone loved her. Her and Victor were really close despite him still calling her “cousin”.

11 years passed, when one day, on a stormy night, Victor was just looking out of the door window, and the terrifying thunderstorm that was coming straight to them. Suddenly, the thunder hit a tree very close to his house, which then turned into a huge fire wall. Victor didn’t know what just happened Infront of him. His neighbor, a scientist, then explained to him that what he saw was called lightning, he explained him everything about electricity. The young man was amazed. And that was when he decided to learn everything about the earth and about science. Just when he was supposed to leave for university, his mother tragically died. Despite that, he continued his journey as life continued. 

This chapter introduces us to Henry Clerval, a friend of Victor and the story of how his mother Caroline dies. In this chapter, we also witnessed the old tree burning and shattering by their front yard.

Chapter 3:

This is the chapter where Victor Frankenstein, entered university with a new interest in in biology and looking for education, he arrives at Ingolstadt and recounts his feelings about it.

 

In this chapter we take a look at his backstory; his childhood, his upbringings etc... Once that bit is over, he talks about a thunderstorm that struck his old town. This thunderstorm went on to rampage a tree and disintegrate it. This peaks his interest and he decides to ask a family friend all about it.

Chapter 3:

In this chapter, Victor begins learning from the one professor who interested him the most, Professor Waldman. He spends 2 years learning science until he gets attracted by the science of life and decides to learn about death to understand life. Then he goes on to discover the secrets of life, taking him up to a year. With that information he decided to create a man, from scratch.

In this chapter, we have a look at Victor's background and childhood. He talks about his siblings, their story, and his family in general. One day, a violent thunderstorm knocked out a big tree in his backyard. That’s what started his interest in all things science. 

When Victor is all grown up, he goes to Ingolstadt University where he studies science. One professor, M.WaldMan, really caught his eye. He loved the way he explained everything. Although science was still his passion, he wanted to know more about the human body. So he decided to discover the meaning of life and how it was created. He also wanted to create life on his own.

His feelings towards the creature change once he hears the creature's side of the story, he realizes that the creation isn't evil after all .

 

1-    What is the bad new at the beginning of the chapter? 

As Victor and Henry came back to Ingolstadt after their long walking holiday, a letter was awaiting Victor, precisely, a letter from his father saying that his little brother William was murdered. He was murdered after being lost in the woods. This news came as a surprise and so he decided to go back to his home town, Geneva.

 

2-    Why is Victor full of regret after the death of Justine?

Justine was falsely accused of William’s murder and was then hanged to death. Victor knew this whole time that it wasn’t her, but the monster or creature that killed William, but he also knew that no one will believe him and so he decided to not talk. But he did try to convince his father that it wasn’t her, but he didn’t believe him. And so, he felt guilty that it was of hi fault that she was killed (he was the creator of the creature).

 

3-    How do Victor’s feelings towards the creature change during this character?

As he’s coming back from the mountains, he meets with the creature again, this time fearless. He was ready to kill and destroy that monster. But the creature, kept calm and told him that he was alone, scared and hated and if he doesn’t give him peace, he will continue to kill people. He then invited him to listen to his story in his cave and if he doesn’t like it, he can feel free to destroy him. 

After consideration, Victor understood that the monster was right and so, he changed his feelings and cooperated with him.

Victor was full of regrets, because he knows that his creations is the one who killed his loved ones. 
3) How do Victor’s feelings towards the creature change during this character?
Victor realised trough out the chapter that maybe the "monster" he created has feelings and is not pure evil.

2- William was full of regret after the death of Justine because he knew that she wasn’t guilty with the murder of his brother but he did know who was, his creation.

3- Victor’s feelings towards the creature change in this chapter at the end of the chapter when the monster found Victor in the mountains and talked to him and that’s when Victor realized that as his creator he had to make sure that his creation is happy.

The bad news is that Victor's was murdered and an expensive necklace was stolen. 
 

Because she died being falsely accused of the death of William. Victor knew it wasn't her but did not say anything. It was the monster he created.

His feelings change during the end because he sees that the monster has feelings and is not evil.

Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (the fourth son of King George III), and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After the deaths of her father and grandfather in 1820, she was raised under close supervision by her mother and her comptroller, John Conroy. She inherited the throne aged 18 after her father's three elder brothers died without surviving legitimate issue. Though a constitutional monarch, Victoria privately attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments; publicly, she became a national icon who was identified with strict standards of personal morality.

Victoria married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840. Their children married into royal and noble families across the continent, earning Victoria the sobriquet "the grandmother of Europe" and spreading haemophilia in European royalty. After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, British republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign, her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration. She died on the Isle of Wight in 1901. The last British monarch of the House of Hanover, she was succeeded by her son Edward VII of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

 

1-   In the first few days of his life …

In the beginning of his life, the creature ate small fruits, leaves and plants from the forest. 

He drank water from the river, he later stole a cup to drink easier from the river.

He later discovered fire, and realized that it was made of wood. He then collected it and lighted fire every day. As it became cold, it was very necessary. 

2-   What important things do you think the creature learns by watching the family?

As he watches the family in the cottage, the creature learns life and how to live in a society. He learns how to speak, eat, and think just like a little baby. He is like a child. He is learning everything in life through this family. He learns about work, about music, books, family (father, brother, sister) … 

 

 

Frankenstein: Chapter 7

 

1-   How does the creature help the family in the cottage? 

As he continues to watch and learn from the family. He sees that the old man every day goes to the forest and picks up some wood to create fire. One day, he saw that the old man was very tired and sad and worked hard, and so, at night he decides to pick it up himself. He brings them a huge pile, and the very next morning, the family woke up very happy and surprised. The old man decides to stay home that day and spend time with his family. This put a very big smile on the creatures’ face. 

 

2-   Who had written the piece of paper in the creature’s pocket?

After Victor has created the creature, he wrote a piece of paper that described him. And so, he described him as ugly and disgusting, frightening and horrible. And before that the creature has left his house, he took some cloths to feel warm and then when he opened the paper, he didn’t understand anything, but now that he knows how to read, he understood it and felt very sad. He then went to the river and saw his reflection and thought the same way.

3-   How does the creature feel when he reads the paper? Why? 

When he read it, he immediately felt sad and depressed. Already everyone was throwing stones at him on how he looks, but know even his creator feels the same way. He feels hopeless, and just when he was imagining the scenarios of the family’s reaction, he doesn’t think its worth it. He feels stupid and dumb. And so, I think he went and decided to kill his creator’s family to draw his attention. And that’s what he did.

The creature eats lots herbs , plants , and little fruits .

The fire keeps him warm .

He learns that not all humans are cruel .

Frankenstein's creature helps the family by gathering wood from the forest , as well as not stealing their food .

Victor Frankenstein was the one whom had written the papers that the creature found his pocket .

The creature feels betrayed by his owner , he is depressed and feels ashamed of himself .

In the beginning of the chapter he eats leaves and plants.

He said that he found a stick with fire on it.  

2 What important things do you think the creature learns by

watching the family who live in the cottage?

He felt emotion, joy and happiness, he discovered many things thanks to them.  

chapter 7:

1-How does the creature help the family in the cottage?

In winter he will bring them wood, in spring,he will bring them food. 

2- Who had written the papers that the creature had in his pocket?

Doctor Frankenstein (victor Frankenstein) his creator. 

3-How does the creature feel when he reads the papers? Why

Does he feel these things?

He feels sad and angry because of the hate his own creator said about him, it’s like saying bad things about your own child.
