I thought Surveys were just done to either find out about something or just get people opinions on the topic at hand. I always had in my mind you just ask a list of questions about something you want to know about and just go about ask anybody.

According to whatis.com,Survey research is the collection of data attained by asking individuals questions either in person, on paper, by phone or online. Conducting surveys is one form of primary research, which is the gathering data first-hand from its source. The information collected may also be accessed subsequently by other parties in secondary research. The survey method is relevant to both descriptive and explanatory research efforts.

While researching, no pun intended about research survey. I found that my beliefs about surveys aren't so simple I thought it may have been. There are key properties of the survey research, i.e, sampling from a population,( guess I just can't get up and choose as I feel anymore, I must have a specific target etc.) Designing instruments for data collection ( I have to properly structure a way to obtain the information I need, not just ask random questions I think I may need answer but questions that would indeed assist me in the survey.) Overall I understood that surveys provide essential benchmarks, they uncover the "why", they give a voice and also helps in decision making whether for public of private use.
