"Thirteen Reasons Why" is a young adult novel written in 2007 by Jay Asher. It is the story of a young high school student as she descends into despair brought on by betrayal and bullying, culminating with her suicide. She details the thirteen reasons why in an audio diary which was mailed to a friend two weeks after her death.
"Thirteen Reasons Why" has received recognition and awards from several young adult literary associations, and the paperback edition reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list in July 2011. A screenplay was written, based on the original release of the book, that became the basis of the dramatic television series 13 Reasons Why released through Netflix on March 31, 2017. The screenplay contains several deviations from the book, including, but not limited to, name changes, plot elements, and character personalities.

* Side A: Justin Foley is the first person Hannah Baker named as one of the reasons. The story begins when she and Justin Foley had their first kiss at the playground. Things went pretty sweet until a rumor about their relationship went around school, saying their relationship is further than just a kiss. Justin did nothing but stay silent.

* Side B: Alex Standall created a list of freshmen who have the best butt and Hannah was on the list although it was not true. After that, people only cared about her butt and things went worse as she even got smacked by a jerk at the Blue Spot Liquor. This list is the biggest reason caused the end of her life.

* Side A: Jessica Davis is the third reason. She and Hannah Baker were all new to this town and with the help of Miss Antilly, they got to know each other. The two girls and Alex Standall were all happy because they would not alone in the first few weeks at school. When the list was created, right next to Hannah's name is Jessica's name as she was being voted the worst butt. Hannah got a scar above her eyebrow by Jessica on the day the list was created although she did not do anything. To Hannah, the scar is more than just a scar. It is the reminder of distrust.

* Side B: The main character of this side is Tyler Down. He is totally a stalker, who secretly took pictures of Hannah and other girls. He caused her to feel unsafe inside her own house, although it used to be the only space she feels safe, by taking away her privacy.

* Side A: Courtney Crimsen is one of the most popular girls at school with such an amazing image toward everyone. She is nice and sweet with others, so of course, people love her. Hannah used to think about her as a friend before she used Hannah. There was a party and Courtney asked Hannah to go with her just because she needs a ride. Hannah accepted because she thought Courtney had seriously thought back about their friendship. At the party, Hannah discovered the selfishness of Courtney so she decided to leave and simply broke this kind of friendship with Courtney. Hannah was totally sick of this town, and also, with its people.

*Side B: The cheerleaders at Hannah's school made a Valentine survey for fundraising this year. Although everybody thought about it as a joke and so was she, Hannah joined. Marcus Cooley asked Hannah out for a date at Rosie's because Hannah is number one on his survey's result. Because of politeness, Hannah accepted. The date was actually an awful experience when Marcus harassed her by touching her knees and even going to pass over the limit if Hannah did not shove him out the booth.

* Side A: After the leaving of Marcus Cooley, Zach Dempsey appeared as the next reasons. He is one of her classmates in Peer Communications class. In this class, each of them has a paper bag to receive notes from others. She started wondering when she did not receive any notes although she made a huge change in appearance. She found out the one who took it was Zach. It might not a big deal to him, but to a person who was on the verge of hopelessness like Hannah, it affected everything. She decided to put an anonymous note to the teacher, suggested the next discursive topic: suicide. Although she fitted the warning signs really well, people actually thought about the note as a joke from someone wanted attention.

* Side B: Ryan Shaver joined the same poetic group as Hannah and by sharing their own poems, they became friends. Ryan is the editor of their school's Lost-N-Found Gazette. Hannah was amazed when he actually could understand the deep meaning rooted inside one of her poems, which she wrote after when people thought her note in Peer Communications class was just a silly joke. Ryan stole her poem and published it as an anonymous item in his newspaper without the allowance from Hannah. He took away her personal thoughts so she no longer felt safe anywhere.

* Side A: Hannah admitted that Clay's name should not be on her list and receive the tapes from her. To her, Clay is a perfect boy, who never has anything bad attach to his name. She went to the party because of the curiosity about Clay. That night, they were connected with empathy and ended up with kisses. She then stopped the kisses when she reminisced how the story of her and Justin ended after their kiss. At the end of the tape, she said she did feel sorry to Clay and to their "almost" relationship. He was one reason she did not want to give up her life.

* Side B: Hannah talked about Justin Foley again. After Clay left, Hannah was crying when Justin and Jessica entered the room without noticing her presence. Although Jessica was drunk, Justin tried to kiss her but things did not go like he wanted so he decided to let her alone. Jessica's life was completely ruined when another guy came in to rape her and Hannah did nothing to stop him. Although they have the opportunity to stop that guy, Justin and Hannah did nothing.

* Side A: She then left the party with Jenny Kurtz, a school's cheerleader, when she offered Hannah for a ride. Jenny was drunk, she ended up hitting a Stop sign, and refused to take the responsibility of it. Frustrated, Hannah got out of her car and tried to call the police to report the broken sign. Jenny then stopped her by lying. The repercussion of the broken sign is another accident happened that night. One of the two drivers died thanks to the selfishness of her.

* Side B: This tape is about Bryan Walker, the guy who raped Jessica that night. She walked pass Courtney's house when they had a party. Courtney and Bryan asked her to join them in the hot tub, and she accepted. After others began to leave, Bryan started getting closer to Hannah and even harassing her. She did not stop him. She let him rape herself, as it is the only thing she needed to push her to the darkness forever. She then killed herself the next day.

* Rating: 9/10.
* Comment: This book is really awesome!! Everything in this book connected others so well that I cannot stop myself from continuously reading it. Each character's characteristics were depictured completely through the whole book, piece by piece gave me a full view of them. By the very detailed narrating of the main character of this book, Hannah Baker, I found myself enjoy every single page of "Thirteen Reasons Why", immersed in the horrible story of her life, and empathized with her feelings. With me, this book is a memorable reading experience, as this is one of the very first novels I read in English, and I really enjoyed it from the very first page to the last.
