The community I belong to is that of Oregon, a state that is characterized by natural beauty, multi-ethnicity, and highly civic-minded people. I associate myself with the state of Oregon because of its outdoor culture, environmental beliefs, and commitment and inclusion. Oregon comprises urban areas such as Portland and the rural with farming and Indigenous background. I observe a social change here influenced by its history of migration, environmental movements and political movements.

Oregon is culturally influenced by environmental stewardship, diversity and community involvement. Since the protests of racial justice in Portland, the revival of Indigenous culture, and the sustainability efforts have all impacted the Oregonian way of thinking about change. Cultural festivals and other events such as the Indigenous powwows showcase some of the traditions that have shaped our sense of identity. The Oregon communities have a very strong DIY and activist culture that motivates residents to voice their concerns and advocate change.

Historically, Oregon has a complex relationship with social change. The Oregon Trail migration shaped early settlement, but the state also carried exclusion laws that targeted people of color. Later, moments like the Vanport Flood of 1948 revealed both community resilience and systemic racial inequality. Oregon has a history of activism, from timber industry labor struggles to civil rights protests, which continue to shape how communities here address inequality and envision justice.

The environment in Oregon contributes significantly towards community change. Wildfires, drought, and climate change are all such challenges the state has to struggle with and impact the housing, migration, and health. Meanwhile, Oregon has rivers, forests and coasts that offer cultural and economic support to the communities. Environmental challenges compel the Oregonians to be creative in green energy, conservation and sustainable agriculture. The disparities also come out in these changes since, in many cases, rural and indigenous communities suffer more due to the changes in climate.
