The funds help lead research programs designed to track the declining numbers of elephants, particularly in the Central African forest. They also use donations to fund paid guards to patrol the grounds of these areas. As a result of having guards to keep watch for poachers, these areas have populations of elephants 7 times higher than areas with no patrol. When making a donation to the cause, donors will receive a newsletter to remain updated on the impact of their efforts. The ivory that was burned was gathered from scavenging African parks and from confiscation at security checks. This ritual first took place in 1989, when President Daniel arap Moi burned tusks to send a message about the negativity of ivory hunting. His actions sparked changes under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Since then, 14 countries have participated in the ivory burning to send a message. The charity utilizes three objectives, education, coexistence, and research, to achieve their main goal. Their research helps bring light to the ways elephants affect ecology, more information on male elephant patterns, human-wildlife conflicts and solutions to them. One of the ways Elephants for Africa educates the public is through reaching out to the youth by hosting motivational talks and interest parties.  In addition, they host fundraising events and sell merchandise to increase donations.
