Each modern car has a computerized system which basically controls the whole entity of the machinery from the lights to the fuel injection. This computer is otherwise known as ECU or Electronic Control Unit and it has a key importance regarding the whole performance of the car. And as we talk about computer system, we can be sure that they can be hacked as well and this is what tuning is all about.

What exact features does the ECU control?

In general the newer your car, the more functionalities are under ECU control especially the below ones:

Automatic transmission system

Vehicle stabilization system

Fuel injection

Valve support

Ignition

Timing

Speed governance

The ECU is located inside the car’s dashboard and it has a little chip which is located in the injection system and its key role is to control the air and fuel mix that’s a chemical process which makes a car go. This mix is the most crucial to the proper working of a car engine and the chip is by default programmed to provide the most optimal results. However for many car fanatics, optimal is not the best and if they want to make their car’s performance better, they turn to a chip tuner specialist who can remap the ECU and with this it can improve the car’s performance, let that be speed related or consumption related.

Risks of chip tuning and obd tuning

First of all OBD and chip tuning refer to the same action. While chip tuning can for instance help a car go much faster, this would generally mean that it would get worn off all the faster too. On the longer haul this means tons of mechanics which would go bad or get damaged. This is why, chip tuning is generally not worth it with cars, which their owner wants to use for a longer period of time.

How professional chip tuners work

Remapping means that this new chip should be installed instead of the old one. This requires lots of experience and professionalism to be installed perfectly, therefore only chip tune at someone who has a good name in the business and who has plenty of proven experience in remapping. Many people nowadays use chip tuning to save on consumption costs for which it can help on a longer haul. However, when used for performance enhancement it may involve the changing of many other car parts which would eventually cost a lot. Tuning can be great on short haul but it can also become a costly hobby in the same time.
