1945 - World War II Ends

The world war ends, and Japan surrenders on August 15th. Korea was now independent and everyone was happy, but soon afterwards on September 8th, Korea was divided into two by the United States and the Soviet Union by the 38th parallel because of the cold war. South Korea was under the United States, and North Korea was under the Soviet Union. Many people have tried to cross between the two countries, but many people have died trying to cross the border because of the Korean Demilitarized zone (DMZ).

1950 ~ 1953 - The Korean War

On June 25th, the North Koreans’ army (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) attacked South Korea crossing the 38th parallel, and became a fight. It was the first real fight in the cold war, Russia and the US fought each other in the Korean war. The war was against the Communist countries (the Soviet Union, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, China), and the democratic countries (South Korea, US, etc). The United Nations were also involved in the war, they attacked the North Korean army in Inchon, and cut them into half. The war ended in 1953, but the Korean peninsula is still divided. During the Korean war, many refugees in the North tried to escape to the South to find a safe place for them. During the war, many terrifying things happened, such as the Summer of terror.

1948 May 10th - Republic of Korea established

The first election took place in South Korea, and president Syngman Rhee was elected. He became the first president of South Korea, from July 24, 1948 to April 26, 1960.

1948 August 25th - The Kim Family Regime starts

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)was established by Kim Il-sung as the leader, and until now his descendants are leaders of North Korea, which is called the Kim Family Regime. The North Korean people trust and believe in them very much.

1988 September 17th to October 2nd - South Korea hosts the 1988 Summer Olympics (Games of the XXIV Olympiad)

The 1988 summer olympics, also called the Games of the XXIV Olympiad, was the second olympic that was hosted in Asia, and the first in Korea. It was the largest ever number of participating nations to that date, where 159 nations participated. In that olympic, South Korea was ranked 4th in the medal count.

1965 June 22nd - Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea

A truce was made between the two countries, Japan and South Korea. They made this truce beta use of diplomatic relations, so that their international relationships between other countries will get better.

1961 January 20th - John F. Kennedy becomes the president of the United States

John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States. He was a democratic leader, who made the civil right in the United states better. He was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963. People still are not exactly sure about why he was assassinated, and there are many theories.

1969 - Internet was invented

The internet was invented gradually over time, and the time that the internet was invented or the person who invented it is not exact. In those days, it was used differently from now days, it was used for a weapon for the cold war. People like scientists and researchers used it to connect and communicate with others.

1991 - The Cold War Ends

The cold war ended because of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The economy of the Soviet Union was getting worse and worse, and the leader Mikhail Gorbachev wanted to end the cold war and make the Soviet Union to improve politically and economically again. The Soviet Union collapsed soon after that and were divided into many countries, and had a independence and became Russia in 1917.
