This takes place right after a teacher has presented a student with new information. The teacher provides scaffolding in a highly structured environment. The teacher observes the student and corrects any errors the student makes, before it has a chance to become ingrained.

During this phase, students get multiple chances to solve problems that they will have a high likelihood of being able to solve. The teacher can use his/her discretion to decide if a student should practice in pieces, or in its entirety. A student needs to experience success several times at this stage.

At this stage, students are getting less structure and more difficult situations in which to practice the new skill or procedure. Students should still experience success, but they should have to work harder to achieve it. The teacher encourages the student to start monitoring his/her own progress.

This stage is also known as independent practice. It is only reached after students have had success in a variety of situations, and a variety of levels, from simple to complex. At this level, students are working towards becoming faster and more accurate. Students are still encouraged to self-monitor their progress. They are also encouraged to share breakthroughs with other classmates, and comment on how their classmates' success has helped them achieve success.
