The Underground Railroad was a secret network that helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom, mostly in the years before the Civil War. It wasn’t a real railroad, but a group of safe houses and brave people who helped guide others north to free states or Canada. One of the most important people involved was Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave who returned to the South many times to help over 70 others escape. She became known as the “Moses” of her people. Other important figures included Frederick Douglass, a former slave who spoke out against slavery, and William Still, who kept records of the people he helped. Many laws at the time made life harder for those trying to escape. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was especially dangerous because it made it legal to capture escaped slaves even in free states and punished anyone who helped them. This law caused the Underground Railroad to grow stronger as more people joined to fight against it. The Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act also added tension by allowing slavery in new territories, which led more people to speak out. Even though helping slaves escape was illegal, conductors on the Underground Railroad believed in justice and were willing to risk everything. The Underground Railroad played a big part in the fight against slavery and showed that even in dark times, people could come together to do what was right.

The Underground Railroad spread across many regions of the United States, especially in the South, the North, and the Midwest. Key cities include Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and Detroit. These places are important because they show how location helped people escape. Some areas had farms and open land to hide, while others had busy cities with safe houses. These regions were a mix of farms and factories.

education.nationalgeographic.org
