Burro Genius (a play on words) is about a boy who came from Mexico and was told by everyone that he was dumb and that he could not learn English even though he was later in life diagnosed with extreme dyslexia. Victor Villasenor would publish books about his life after high school and how it affected him emotionally and mentally. This book would be for my 11th/12th grade students.

Social Justice/Human Rights - 9th Grade

La Linea was written by a middle school teacher who worked in a border town between Mexico and America. It was written for her students. It parallels the struggles of crossing the border in the United States with the courage it takes to overcome adversity between Mexican/American society and culture.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a book by Sherman Alexie about a physically handicapped Native American boy who goes to an all-white school. This book would be for my 9th graders.

A Long Walk to Water is about children who walk through war torn Sudan in order to feed themselves and their families. I wouldn't mind using the audio book version of this book as well so the students can follow along with a reader.

Monster is a book that a lot of my students will like because they have family who have been stricken by poverty, have gone to jail, or have been victims or pursuers of violence around our community. This book deals with a lot of adult themes and is for 12th graders.

Bud, Not Buddy is a powerful book that I would read with my 9th graders. It deals with creativity, identity, and the Great Depression. Historically fueled, this would be a great book to read during a US history section about the 1920s.

US History/Slavery - 11th Grade

This book would be taught hand-in-hand with US History and Slavery. It is about a Frederick Douglass, who overcame slavery to become one of the most well-known and influential people of the time.
