My source of inspiration: Caroline Downey & Denis Desmond

Caroline Downey & Denis Desmond were able to book Hozier into the 2015 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which enabled him to be heard in 180 countries, despite his niche sound and controversial debut music video just two years prior. This was a key part in Hozier accumulating public favour and being able to be discovered by fans who would never have been exposed his music via conventional methods in their home countries. Victoria's Secret is a household name, their Fashion shows are watched by hundreds of millions of people not just on the day but later through press releases, viral videos, reaction videos, magazines, compilations etc. and thanks to Downey and Desmond Hozier would be mentioned in every piece of that media.

Water From Your Eyes

After researching the Alternative/ Indie band 'Water from your eyes' ( consisting of Nate Amos and Rachel Brown) I have observed a few opportunities which could benefit their success (specifically) online.

1) I have noticed a lack of consistency in the visuals the band post to their social media ( instagram/Facebook/X) I believe this is very important for developing artists as in the never-ending flurry of social media posts it is hard to be memorable to a potential fan, it is beneficial for their brand if viewers of their posts can recognise their faces from previous posts- with inconsistent visuals viewers might not notice they have been watching their videos more than once and the band might miss their chance of piquing potential fans' interest.

To bring consistency and in that visibility to the band's brand I would organise for the members to take 3 varying photoshoots with local creatives ( potentially creatives with established social media followings which could expose both 'fanbases' to one another online by being posted to each other's pages.) And I would encourage the band to use these images in their social media to show their faces and brand to potential audiences, establish a consistent visual and to give something new, fun, fresh and creative to their existing audiences who could enjoy the photography, creativity and nuance of the shoots.

2) WFYE enjoy comedy skits on their social media- Considering the band's fanbase is young, American, and liberal I would reach out to a local ( New York) podcaster such as Caleb Hearon, who often hosts comics and influencers on his podcast and ask to be on his show. That way BOTH parties can introduce their amicable fanbases to one another, create a comedy- based episode of a podcast, the band can promote their new single ' it's a beautiful place', and their audiences can learn more about the band and their character in an authentic and genuine way.

Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan was signed to Atlantic Records at 17 after going viral on Youtube doing covers. She was later dropped after her release of (the now massive hit) ' Pink Pony Club'. Soon after she started writing songs with Producer Dan Nigro and released them alongside homemade music videos which were created and funded by Chappell and her friends. Thanks to the attention of the music videos, and Roan's TikTok and instagram videos online- the songs gained recognition and she was soon set out to open for Olivia Rodrigo and Fletcher. In 2023 she booked a headliner tour and went Mega-viral on TikTok for her performance of 'Good Luck Babe!'. During this time she had made the visual switch into Drag ( 'daughter of famous drag star Sasha Colby), and openly came out as a Lesbian, with the majority of her songs describing her queerness and sapphic love- which sustained public interest.

What would I do to propel Chappell even Higher?

Considering Chappell Roan's strong and vocal support for the queer community ( especially the Mid-Western/ Southern queer communities in America) I would create a charity music festival in Chappell's name where other queer artists, allies and celebrities( from Elton John to Trixie Mattel to Cardi B, to Meghan Thee stallion, to Lil Nas x, Rene Rapp etc) would perform and pay all profits to charity. Though this may seem like a risky step I believe that it would not hurt Chappell's strong stance in Pop music today as she has been openly queer throughout her career and it is what she is known for. Artists could choose which charity they would like to support, and speak about causes close to their hearts. On top of that it would create a space for queer artists show appreciation to hundreds of thousands of their own fans, in a genuine and authentic way at a very important time in American history. The controversy of a queer festival would garner news attention, social media frenzy and essentially free advertisement. The festival could even be invested in by the performers themselves and the act of philanthropy would not only genuinely help a struggling community but also buy the artists public favour and media attention.

The festival could take place outdoors in the summer, and could also host smaller artists which Chappell has been known to give platform to (specifically drag artists). It could be a place for small queer businesses to promote their work also- such as food trucks, clothing brands, jewellers, other charities looking to gain acknowledgement, etc etc with stalls open between stages.

Festivals and spaces where small artists can perform are very attractive to creative companies, producers, TV executives etc, as it is a place where they can scout talent, all the more supporting the cause.

Overall I believe this would benefit Chappell's career significantly, because of both the massive amount of media content that could be created through this event via performers, fans, influencers, interviewers, review videos, live streams etc, but also because she would be giving back to the community that lifted her into fame. The majority of her followers on social media are queer people, giving back to them for what they had given her would be an amazing genuine way to solidify life-long fans, and build a musical empire.
