What does the ideal educational system look like for youth in group homes, residential therapeutic settings, and youth trying to learn while incarcerated? by

Dream big and bold! Don't worry about cost or reality! What systems of power and oppression would be dismantled and how? How would student voice and funds of knowledge be honored and dignified? What does transformation of the system as it looks like? If we could build the greatest future of educational opportunities possible - describe how it looks, sounds, feels, and changes the lives of all involved in the process. We are fielding anonymous and inclusive responses for this audio collaboration. Your submission will remain anonymous unless you wish to be identified. Please respond in audio in any language of your preference. If you require video messaging for ASL or other accomodations, please reply to this backchannel, and we'll find a way to incorporate your vision. We would like to hear from as many individuals as possible - and are particularly eager to receive submissions from staff members, parents of children, and especially youth that are currently experiencing or have experienced learning in a residential setting of any type and/or their siblings. Click on the three dots for more submission options and then click the [purple microphone] icon to submit an audio response.

Education would serve a greater, more fulfilling purpose other than passing scores and getting into college. Educating this population will not face the continuous, brutal task of overcoming financial challenges, ideally. Society will see these children as those that need extra help, attention, and resources rather than burdens. The school lunches are prepared by a chef and made with fresh foods, because research shows that chid behavior significantly improves when they eat healthy foods. All children are accepted into the school environment - as in, there are no barriers for education even if you are categorized as SPED/ELL, because parents learn to accept their children for who they are. I hope that behavior issues are addressed with professionals- and not like in most pubic schools where behavior is often made worse because of the poor enrichment. This is wishful thinking, but maybe one day I will live to see this turn-around since these children already have it hard enough to survive. The classroom environment in which we were taught is not at all suitable for children to grow and learn optimally. I hope this entire system is reformed in addition to the prison/jail environments. In prison and jail, inmates are often treated as less than human and have little opportunity to learn and even reform behaviors. Most of the population that is incarcerated have some sort of brain injury/trauma/illness. When society understands that "evil" is not born but created then will theses changes take place on a large scale. At times, it almost seems like we have to make an entire new universe to bring change for that which we desperately seek for youth and troubled youth.

For kids in group homes, I think it would be useful for them to learn in small groups that way they don't feel overwhelmed by not understanding a topic and can ask for help without feeling embarrassed. Kids need fundamental training since they might not have experienced primary education. Youth who are trying to learn while incarcerated would benefit from tutors to come in and help them, but getting people who aren't viewed as an authoritative figure so they feel comfortable. Also, it would be helpful to have career training for when they get out into the job market. In general, providing safe, comfortable, and necessary tools for these youths will help them learn and succeed in their life. Lastly, you can give them training in self-advocacy to try and prevent them from getting taken advantage of when they get out and being able to feel strong and confident in their every day lives.
