Video1-Q2: Brancusi's "Kiss" sculpture significantly differs from traditional sculptures because he portrays a simple block like form with a very little detail.

Brancusi's "Kiss" was a major contrast to sculptures of the time. The world was so used to seeing realistic pieces being done in polished marble. Brancusi on the other hand opted to keep the rough texture of the stone and did not choose to make the figures "realistic human figures."

Brancusi's "Pogany" sculpture was not well received and in fact was considered the most ridiculed piece, by the press. People at the time could not appreciate the shape of this portrait and didn't think it was realistic.

The press and viewers of the piece, Mlle Pogany, responded to it with ridicule. During this time period, nothing like this had ever been done before, and people did not know how to respond since it was so different.

Brancusi's poor Romanian background came into play when artists were trying to find a more "primitive" style to their art. (Wood carvings, etc.)

"Mlle Pogany" reminds me of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" because of the abstraction and gestures the sculpture is making, like the hands on it's face.

Brancusi's "kiss" was just different. For the longest time we've seen statues with extreme detail with things like veins in arms and even wrinkles in the faces... But here we have something so simplified and the only detail we really get is the hair... he used stone instead of marble too which effected how realistic his figures were. This was why the press didn't receive his work well.

The press absolutely hated it... A lot people didn't like how it looked and saw it as an egg instead of a head. it was a star at the armory show in a bad way. Abstract art means that the art is aiming to reach its goal using shapes and colors and textures.

2nd video: the comments Brancusi received were not very nice. People made fun of it and said it didn't look like a head
, it looked more like an egg. They didn't understand that it was a woman.

Brancusi's "Kiss" was significantly different than traditional sculpture because artist historians were used to viewing pieces with heavy amounts of human characteristics and great detail. The "Kiss" is a piece where they do not replicate humans but, the artist appreciater recognizes the figures are human.

1. Brancusi's Kiss was different from traditional sculpture because of its simplicity and its abstraction presented. Earlier works were meant to show realism but this piece just focused on the simple parts of the human body.
2. For something to be abstract, It needs to really be unique and somewhat seen as "odd". It shouldn't be realistic, it should represent different subjects using symbols throughout an abstract piece.
