The Beginning of a Partisan Unit

After the murder of the four brothers' family, the Bielskis moved from West Belarus into a forest where they created a partisan unit.

They only chose to help and save the unfortunate Jews and give them shelter instead of fighting the Nazi's directly. Even so, the brothers sent fighters to help the ghetto inmates get out of the Ghetto. But it was difficult to move them outside of the Ghettos, and some didn't want to leave in fear of being caught, killed, or not survive in the wilderness.

Shortages

Food shortages occurred within many camps and independent communities, especially for the escaped Jews of World War II. The Bielski brothers gained many of their crops and food supplies from peasants, ones they could trust to be supplied by. Many peasants were scared to help the brothers out as they might be caught by the Germans and punished, leading to some of them ratting on the camp.

External Dilemmas

Many peasants often refused to help the Bielski brothers and turned to telling the police about their location. The community had to be on duty constantly to prevent attacks by police. They also had to deal with the problems of freezing from the cold of Belarus' winter and needed to care, insulate, and warm 300 people in dirt homes.

Year-long Escapade

In February of 1943 Nazi German Police found their way to the camp and fired upon guards of the camp. Before this, in December of 1942, the police had found leads about the group, which sent them on alert and started an evacuation order to all group members, and once the guards died, they started to flee.

The Great Escape

They landed in an area near the home village of the Bielski Brothers, Stara-Huta, before changing the location. In July, the group had to steer away from a 52,000-soldier search operation called "Hermann". The Brothers managed to move around 800 members through the swamps and escape the search, turning it into one of the biggest escapes of World War II.

Internal Dilemmas

External struggles weren't the only problem as the Bielski's had to keep the inside relations well off so as not to have the community break apart. Some argued about the leadership and the work they have to do for the group.

New Living

After the big chase of 1943, many were able to live more comfortably as they didn't have to live in fear of being found by the Germans as much as they had in the previous camp.

The Jews who had been stripped of their culture and possessions could go back to life as it was and live how they wanted without being persecuted for their customs and way of living.

Social Classes

Though the social classes were not reestablished as it was before, instead putting more equality between more camp members. Fighters have more privileges, and women are not allowed to participate in fighting or scavenging. Many of the skilled workers did not have a change in their areas of work. The justice and decision making were all fair, the punishments were always able to be given to any offense to keep it in order, all led and decided by the founding brother, Tuvia.
