Hello, welcome to our tour! We will be going back in time and looking at what happened in the battles of the Civil War! The battle we will be going over is the Battle of Shiloh. This battle was one of the bloodiest battles in this war. The Battle of Shiloh started on April 6 and it ended on the 7th of April in 1862. Before the battle, Albert Sidney Johnston brought his forces to Corinth to prepare for his operations against Grant. The Confederate retreat was met by Grant, which consisted of the Army of Tennessee. The battle began when the Confederate Army launched a surprise on the Union troops at Shiloh Church, and fighting broke out throughout Shiloh Church, the Peach Orchard, and Water Oaks Pond. Throughout the day, the Confederates battered the Union troops, driving it back towards Pittsburgh Landing and threatening to trap it against the Tennessee River. The union troops were planning to be offensive, but they had not fortified their camps. Then, General Johnston seized the initiative and attacked Grant before reinforcements could arrive. The battle was fought in the woods by inexperienced men on both sides. Johnston was mortally wounded on the first afternoon. He was shot in his right knee, severing an artery making him bleed to death. Then on April 7, Grant’s attack launches it in the morning, and Beauregard orders a counterattack. The Confederates fall back and have to regroup, so Beauregard orders a second counterattack. At 3:00 pm, he realizes that he’s outnumbered and there were massive amounts of casualties, so he retreats to Corinth, making the Union army win the Battle of Shiloh. Once the battle was over there were more than 23,000 total casualties. In the battle, they would use a conical-shaped bullet which increased accuracy, and because the accuracy was increased the number of casualties went up too. After the bloody battle, Grant dispatched Brig. Gen. William T. Sherman and Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Wood to go find out the Confederates' positions. A few miles from Fallen Timber, they encountered rebel cavalry under Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The forest charges to the Federals and gets shot by a Federal infantry at point-blank range. This makes the Federal forces go in the direction of Pittsburg Landing, letting the Confederate troops escape. During the battle, many lives were lost on both sides, but for the Confederates Johnston’s death was devastating.
