3 Reflection - List down 3 things you find most useful to you after reading through the EYDF.

1. The Developing Child
Educarer plays an important role in the environment where the child being able
to grow and learn. Knowledge of physical, cognitive, and social emotional
development in a child is also important for us as an educarer to consider when
developing our lesson plans.

2. The Involved Family
Family involvement can free teachers to focus more on the task of teaching
children. By having contact with parents, we can learn more about the child’s
needs and the home environment, which is informative so that we can apply
toward better meeting those needs. I believe parents who are involved tend to
have a more positive view of the educarer, which results in improved educarer
morale.

3. The Professional Educarer
As a professional educarer we need to have the ability to develop our
relationship with the child. Being able to build trusting relationships with them in
order to create a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.
We also need to be patient , kind , caring personality so that we are able to
engage and motivate the child to learn.

Write down 2 or more questions you have regarding how to use the EYDF
when you work with the children in your centre.

1. The family involvement played important part of EYDF how we as an
educarer approach the parents when we observed certain atypical
behaviour in their child appropriately without hurting the parents
feelings ?

2. The social and emotional situate of their developmental. As an
educarer how we should deal a feisty child ? What are the ways or method
we can use to calm him / her ?

1.

The first thing that is most useful to me are the example of activities in the “Intentional Programme” that the educarer can do with the children to develop them holistically and have a great impact on the foundations of learning in children. It allows me to be able to plan the curriculum according to their needs to maximise their potential in all their developmental domains. It transforms my understanding that the role of an educarer is not to babysit.

The second thing that is useful to me is that staff-child interactions are to be respectful, responsive and reciprocal. Being respectful includes greeting the child warmly upon arrival at the centre to reduce the level of separation anxiety of the child. Being responsive allows the child to be able to trust the world around them as their basic needs are met. Being reciprocal acknowledges that the child’s feelings and thoughts are important and this enhances their self-esteem.

The third thing that is useful to me is that the educarer should continue to be open to new ideas for lifelong learning in this field and to keep herself updated with the latest research and practices to continually improve on her approach in the care and development of children. She should be able to work as a team with her colleagues and be open to feedback from her mentors.

2.

In the first 2 pillars of the EYDF, “the developing child” and “the intentional programme”, there is much emphasis on what educarers can do with the child. At this age group, there is a lot of one-to-one interactions with teacher and child, unlike in older age groups where there is more classroom activities and teacher directed learning. The first question I have regarding how to use the EYDF in the centre is that with the given teacher-child ratios stipulated by ECDA, how can I give the child more one-to-one attention in order to meet their needs? I find it challenging to for the 1:5 ratio at infant care centres to be able to implement the EYDF effectively with this ratio.

The second question I have regarding how to use EYDF at the centre is that the EYDF has much emphasis on caregiving practices for infants. For the older age group (pre-nursery) level, some parents may begin to expect the teachers to conduct less “routine care” and more emphasis on academic domains such as literacy and numeracy. Is the EYDF sufficient to cater to the needs for the older age group (pre-nursery)?

Observation, Reflection and Documentation
e.g. Good documentation reveals patterns in individual developmental pathways.

1. Children develop and learn through interaction with the significant adults in their lives as well as other children. They also learn by carrying out actual tasks. Routines like diaper-changing, and feeding and bath times need not be lost time. These times are daily opportunities where you can interact with babies and toddlers by touching, talking, singing or playing with them. These are also great opportunities to meet children’s individual needs, promote learning, and develop strong relationships with them. Self-control, positive behaviour, social skills, hygiene and specific self-help skills can be reinforced through routines.

2. Learning to self-feed can be a messy activity. Remain calm and supportive as toddlers’ coordination and motor skills are still developing. Be prepared for the mess as it is part of their learning to be independent. Place a large piece of cloth or old shower curtain on the floor in the feeding area to make cleaning up easy. You can also involve the children in the cleaning up. Self-feeding activity for toddlers can be seen as an opportunity to help them learn and grow.

3. Infants and toddlers learn through observation, exploration and manipulation of objects and materials in their environment. Children learn about the world by asking questions and making predictions. Materials that are safe and have a variety of uses, should be made accessible throughout the day. Having a variety of materials can keep children engaged and sustain their interest. These also foster creativity, self-direction, attention and on-task behaviour.

1)The Developing Child
Adverse and fetal can lead to physical and chemical disruptions in the brain that can last a lifetime. The biological changes associated with these experiences can affect multiple organ systems and increase the risk not only for impairments in future learning capacity and behavior, but also for poor physical and mental health outcomes.
The environment in which one develops before and soon after birth provides powerful experiences that in ways that then define how much and when they are expressed. Thus, while genetic factors exert potent influences on human development, environmental factors have the ability to alter family inheritance. For example, children are born with the capacity to learn to control impulses, focus attention, and retain information in memory, but their experiences as early as the first year of life lay a foundation for how well these and other excutive function skills develop.

2)The Involved Family
Many parents and guardians work during the day. Remember that scheduling an open house in the morning or conferences in the afternoon may not be conducive to all schedules. Be open to providing a variety of options to encourage participation from all families. The more flexible you are, the more likely parents will take an interest and attend.

3) Unifying Approach to the Provision of Care, Development and Education
The extent to which individual care and education professionals in these settings can foster greater consistency and continuity for children and families throughout the birth through age 8 continuum depends partly on their knowledge and competencies and how they put these into practice in the settings where they work. However, it also depends largely on whether policies and systems at the local, state, and national levels encourage, require, facilitate, or impede continuity and alignment.

2 Questions...
1)How do we apply EYDF with infants in the Centre?
2)How do we handle children who are aggressive towards other children?
