When? – During summer holidays after Year 12 (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) or S5 (Scotland).

How long? – Up to two weeks on placement, along with pre-and-post activities including independent study.

What? – A well-supervised but independent placement relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths - or a combination!

Cost? – You can take part in a placement at no cost. Travel costs are reimbursed and you may also be eligible to receive a bursary.

Where? – Placements take place in a variety of locations including offices, museums, research centres, laboratories or fieldwork settings.

• Our Career Starters programme is for Year 12/S5 and Year 13/S6 who are considering an alternative to university. This programme will give them an insight into the world of EY, and help them decide if the EY Business Apprenticeship is right for them

• Our apprenticeships are in Assurance, Consulting, Strategy and Transactions and Tax. With apprenticeships across our UK offices and at levels 4, 6 and 7 there is bound to be something right for them. An apprenticeship at EY is a great way to start their career.

WFW Virtual Work Experience

WFW are thrilled to offer a virtual work experience programme, particularly suited to students in Year 13 or first year of their university undergraduate degree.

This opportunity gives you the chance to step into the shoes of a WFW team member for the day, completing tasks that replicate the work that trainee solicitors do every day. You'll be able to work through the different modules at your own pace, and should take approximately two to three hours to complete.

After a sudden bump and fall, should they visit A&E or is first aid enough for all?

Wednesday 15th January at 5pm

Rachel and three of her friends were riding their electric scooters, chatting and laughing, not paying attention to the road ahead. Suddenly, they hit a bump they hadn’t noticed, causing them all to lose control and fall off. Rachel scraped her arm badly and banged her knee. Emma flew over her handlebars and landed on her wrist, which began swelling immediately. James hit the ground hard and landed on his shoulder and is in pain. Maya managed to avoid serious injury but ended up with some bruises.

Emma’s swollen wrist might indicate a fracture, and the pain in James’ shoulder may mean a dislocation. Rachel and Maya have come out of the accident with scrapes and bruises.

The NHS are trying to improve the efficiency of Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments. They’ve noticed that some hospitals are struggling to meet the 4-hour waiting time target, where patients should be seen, treated, admitted, or discharged within four hours of arrival. To help solve this, they need to better understand how patients move through A&E and what factors cause delays.

Goal: Join the NHS team to understand why some patients are waiting longer than 4 hours
Mission: Your job is to analyse data from various A&E departments to answer the following questions

• What factors like the type of injury affect waiting times?

• How the number of patients visiting A&E changes across different calendar months and different locations of the UK?

• Is there a trend you can find to advise the NHS how to prepare? What would be the most appropriate site to add an additional minor injuries unit and why?

In partnership with The Rep, Open Theatre’s Work Experience Week in May 2025 is for young people in Years 11-13 with learning disabilities and/or autism, who enjoy drama and have an interest in working within the Arts.

Running from Mon 12 – Fri 16 May, young people will experience an introduction to different job roles in a regional theatre setting, as well as experiencing Open Theatre’s non-verbal physical theatre practice. They will also be supported to work towards achieving an Arts Award qualification. This is a brilliant opportunity to explore what it is like to work within the Arts sector and gain more understanding of future career pathways.

We have big 4 firm KPMG, BDO, Grant Thornton, S&W and CIMA joining us to run hands on practical workshops with you to show you what it’s really like working in the industry and how you could grow your career as a successful accountant, consultant or tax adviser. You will have the opportunity to work on business projects, conduct a profit and loss on a company, work on a consulting project as well as getting the chance to pitch your ideas and work to the professionals across the day. This is an incredible experience for students to network and take part in workshops with 5 of the biggest accounting firms in the world!

Richard Dewdney, Head of Operations at Stonehenge will give you an inside look into how you manage a UNESCO World Heritage site and talk about how he worked his way up through the organisation. With hundreds of possible career paths out there, it can be pretty difficult to make a decision on what you want to pursue after you finish school. To help you with this process, we’ve come up with 6 tips for choosing a career that suits you best.

When you finish school or college, you might want to launch straight into a job role, or an apprenticeship, or you might want to go to university before entering the job market. Whatever stage of your journey you are at, it’s likely that you’ve been encouraged to think about what kind of career you want to have in the future. As daunting as this sounds, here’s how to make it a straightforward process. 

1. Start early

Planning life after school is not a simple process; it can involve months or even years of research. The earlier you start thinking about your future, the more time there will be to properly consider the options.

You can start early on Unifrog! For example, you can search for opportunities like university programs and apprenticeships in the years before you apply, and you can check out the Careers library to find out more about possible careers. This will help you be more aware of things like what qualifications are needed for particular degrees, and how many years of study different routes will take. 

2. Think broadly

It’s pretty unlikely that you will figure out your perfect job immediately, but you may find some fields or sectors you find interesting.

Try to think in broad terms about potential career paths in order to keep your options open, unless you are completely certain. Avoid focusing on a specific profession (such as ‘Radiotherapist’) and instead explore an entire field (such as ‘Medicine and healthcare’). Again, you can do this in Unifrog’s Careers library by searching by career area.

3. Reflect on yourself

Before diving into research, it’s helpful to develop an idea of your strengths, weaknesses, passions and preferences in the working environment. Once you have a good understanding of yourself, you’ll be able to narrow your research to job sectors that fit with your interests and skills.

Unifrog’s Personality and Interests Tools are a great way to start exploring all of this. You can also think about school subjects, part time jobs, hobbies, interests, and work experience that you’ve done, how they went and how you felt about them. Use the Unifrog Activities tool to record what you’ve done, and then the Skills tool to record examples of how you’ve demonstrated key skills.

4. Get some experience

The best way to decide whether a career is for you is to give it a go! Try to get as much work experience in your chosen field as possible. It’s really helpful to hear the opinion of a professional when researching a career path, so make the most of your work experience by talking to the people you shadow. We’ve written a guide to work experience with a few more tips and tricks - you can check it out here!

Work experience will also give you a feel for the types of people that you will be working alongside in your field. If you find that you share some of the skills and interests of the people you shadow, it might mean that this is a potential job for you. 

After you complete your work experience, make sure you assess whether the career and industry is something you have an ongoing interest in. It’s perfectly normal to decide at this point that this might not be the role or field for you. This doesn’t mean that the experience has been a waste of time! On the contrary, you might have saved yourself years of effort and training, only to find that the job you’re qualified for is one that you hate.

You can take notes on your thoughts and observations after each day of your work experience, and once it’s done, ask yourself questions like:

• What did you enjoy about your work experience?

• What did you dislike?

• What skills did you have to use?

• How has it changed your understanding of the profession/industry?

• How does this affect your plans for the future?

5. Figure out the qualifications you need

Once you have an idea of the kind of career path you’re interested in, the next step is to research the qualifications that you’ll need to succeed in that field. Some professions, like medicine and engineering, are more vocational and require specific subject-related qualifications. In other sectors, employers value a variety of subjects and skills, and are more open to different degree choices. Other professions might have alternative qualification options. For example, you might want to explore the Apprenticeship or college route. You can check out our article on which might be the best for you here.

Remember that while the degree or education route you choose is important, it won’t define the course of your entire life. Education can often lead to seemingly unrelated careers. Students from science backgrounds, for example, are increasingly being recruited by employers in the banking and finance industry. Even someone who studies a subject that seems like it will lead straight to a career, like medicine or plumbing, can change their mind and do something else. Studying teaches you lots of different transferable skills!

6. Have a backup plan

Nothing is ever certain, and sometimes life throws you some curveballs. What’s important is to make sure you have another plan in place. You can always use Unifrog's Post 18 Intentions tool to think of a progression backup plan, in case your first choice of career path doesn't work out.

By addressing this possibility at an early stage, you can make sure that the degree or apprenticeship that you choose will suit your plan B pathway, as well as your plan A.

Once you’ve thought everything, make sure you book an appointment with your school’s careers adviser to help you plan your next steps. They can offer a lot of valuable advice as you make important decisions about your future, and will have the insider scoop on the different pathways you could take to get there. 

Lastly, remember that it’s perfectly fine to change your mind in the future. According to a 2018 study by the Bureau of Labour statistics, adults change their job role between 10-15 times over the course of their career. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to have your whole life figured out from the start.

Overview:

Rothschild & Co's Pioneer Work Experience Programme is aimed at year 13 students who are considering a career in financial advisory.

This programme, centred on our Global Advisory division, will serve as an introduction to our M&A, Debt and Restructuring and Global Markets Solutions businesses, giving you a valuable insight into life as a banker at Rothschild & Co.

During the programme, you will have the opportunity to network with junior bankers from our Global Advisory, Wealth Management and Five Arrows divisions, as well as taking part in informative skills sessions. You will also get the chance to understand more about the different business areas mentioned above through listening to presentations from Analysts across each division. Additionally, you will work together in groups with other students to prepare an exciting project and present it at the end of the programme.

We also run tours of our historical archives so students can see for themselves how our success across two centuries has been shaped by the involvement of the Rothschild family, and how our business model makes us truly unique.

We hope that by the end of the programme many of you will be inspired by a career in financial advisory, and as such we will be offering a stay in touch programme for those that are interested in a career with us.

Qualifications and competencies required:

• On track for minimum 136 UCAS points or equivalent

• Candidates should be motivated to learn, have an interest in financial services and be a good team player.

Each year, we offer fully funded placements for British nationals to join The Sultan’s School in Muscat as part of our Student Volunteers Oman Scheme. The programme is open to school/sixth‑form leavers and university students planning a gap year between graduation and first employment.

Join the school community as a classroom assistant, support the IB CAS programme, or get involved in sport, music, and extracurricular activities. Volunteers also take part in trekking and camping trips across Oman’s mountains, beaches and desert.

What’s included: accommodation, meals, airfares, shared car hire, part‑funded Arabic tuition, and a pocket‑money allowance.

The Student Volunteers Oman (SVO) scheme offers young people the chance to spend three months living and volunteering in Muscat, Oman. Run by The British Omani Society, the programme places volunteers at The Sultan’s School, a leading bilingual school where they become part of a vibrant educational community. Volunteers support classroom teaching, help deliver lessons, contribute to the IB CAS programme, and join extracurricular activities such as sport, music, or other areas that match their interests.

BUT…Why did we do it?

Every young person deserves meaningful encounters with employers, regardless of where they live or the opportunities available to them.

As schools place increasing focus on delivering modern work experience and achieving the outcomes of equalex, NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week was created to help make this easier.

Together, NatWest and The Inspirational Learning Group set out to provide schools with flexible, high-quality employer-led experiences that could be delivered in a way that suited to you. 

How did we do it?

Workplace Experiences

130 students. Five NatWest Accelerator Hubs. Real employer encounters.

Students stepped inside NatWest Accelerator Hubs in Manchester, Cardiff, London, Birmingham and Leeds, where they met employees, explored professional workplaces and tackled real business challenges before pitching their ideas to industry experts.

Bringing careers into classrooms.

Throughout the week, NatWest colleagues visited schools across the UK, giving students the opportunity to ask questions, hear authentic career journeys and gain first-hand insight into the wide range of roles available within NatWest!

For many students, these conversations provided their first meaningful employer encounter, helping them connect classroom learning with future careers.
