Calypso's name means "to cover" or "to conceal knowledge" or "to deceive". One day Odysseus finds his way to her island after a long journey at sea. If he were to stay with her he would be granted eternal youth and immortality. He was already married and had a son, but Calypso still detained him for seven years before releasing him on Zeus's orders. After losing Odysseus, her lover of seven years, she attempted to kill herself, "But being immortal, she only went through terrible pain and suffering."
