I chose this film due to multiple reasons at first I could not decide on what to discuss but when I seen this movie I realized the true bond that this father and daughter had. Sam who had developmental disability with an IQ of a seven year old. He had a daughter name Lucy by a woman who was actually homeless. The daughter wanted what was best for her father she put her father's intelligence before her own. Sam was fighting for full custody to get his daughter but of curse they did not believe that he was stabled enough for that. People who suffer from developmental disability in my opinion is very "lovable" towards other people and I saw the bond that Sam had with his daughter and he would do anything and would not let anyone stand in the way of that.

Mackelprang & Salsgiver (2015) states that Developmental disabilities also include disabilities that are believed to require some kind of intervention, care, or treatment for a long duration, if not for life. People with this developmental disability is also known for being labeled as " mental retardation" but that term was stopped due to the disrespect. In the movie, Lucy discussed about a classmate saying that about her father but it gave Lucy a lot more motivation about helping her father become more intelligent.

Models of Disability

The social model indicates the individuals knowledge that they are gaining throughout this process. Social Model: People who had mild mental retardation could achieve employment on a semi-skilled or unskilled level. They functioned independently, owned their own homes and cars, and generally had families (Mackelprang & Salsgiver 2015). In the movie it mentioned Sam had a job at the coffee shop and was very well with people. His social skills were in tact and he showed his true independence.
Medical Model: In the book it discusses that in the medical model an individual's organic, physical and medical problems are the primary assessment targets (Mackelsprang & Salsgiver, pg. 447). Personality and psychosocial status are assessed in the context of the obstacles they create for the treating professionals (Mackelsprang & Salsgiver, pg. 447). So in this case Lucy knows that in her heart her father cannot help that he was born this way but working with him especially on his academics is a start. She will be able to figure out his strengths and weaknesses throughout the challenges.

Sam fights for the custody of his child but he will need all the help he can get at this point. He has his daughter Lucy to guide him through the way but with his form of disability working one on one with the social worker (micro) then bringing in his daughter Lucy to see what was the improvement that was made (mezzo). Lastly, getting Sam involved a lot more in the community as well. Sam was a referee when Lucy was playing soccer so getting involved never been an issue. During the assessment goal setting and intervention are being taken place. Mackelprang & Salsgiver (2015) states that assessments of individuals and families can be divided into three components: information and history, evaluations and impressions, and plans.

Analysis: Practice, Policy, Ethical Issues

Practice of a Counselor would be a lot more relevant in this case because when you're studying to become a counselor you are focusing more on the psychological part you are dealing more on the emotional and psychosocial aspect of practice. The role of a counselor helps the oppressed to see their disability as a positive light (Mackelprang & Salsgiver, pg. 495). Of course Sam wishes that he was "normal" instead of "abnormal" but fighting for custody for your child is a positive outlook on him.
Policy : According to Mackelprang & Salsgiver (2015) it states, in the first decade of the 2000s, the American Association on Mental Retardation readdressed the definition of mental retardation and changed its name to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). They define intellectual disability as a condition characterized by both intellectual and adaptive limitations. An intellectual disability may mean a limitation in certain practical skills such daily living, work, health care, transportation , the use of money, and the use of the telephone.
Ethical Issues: When social workers are dealing with clients, they are dealing with the clients’ ethical core values and social changes that occur throughout an individual’s life. The core values that I think best fits this ethical dilemma: the dignity and worth of the person and the importance of the human relationship. Dignity and worth of the person is describing that the client can still be respected and have a right to voice his/her opinion. Even though Sam is aware of his disability is the reason why he has to fight harder to get full custody of his daughter, he has entitled to voice his own opinion. Social workers want clients to feel self-determined and have the right to change their own needs. Next, the importance of human relationships is very important because you want the client to feel comfortable and will be able to come to you with no form of hesitation. Social workers goal is to strengthen relationships to engage, promote, of whether it’s on the micro, mezzo and macro level of social work practice. In this case, it is both micro and mezzo level of social work practice due to me wanting to not only help Sam but Lucy as well. It is fine to get close with the clients on the professional level in generalist practice but make sure you never overstep your boundaries. So with that being said, I am going to do all that it takes to make sure that the couple is happy and satisfied of course it will not be easy it will be a process. All we can do is trust the process and see what the results will be at the end.

Social Support Mapping

Sam's social support mapping is still in progress and is still maintain. .He is dealing with a lot here. What parent do you know that has a developmental disability still fights to win his rights over his daughter? I consider that hard work and dedication. Sam's lawyer talks about the pros and cons f him keeping his daughter. But, it seems like to me that Lucy is his biggest supporter. Lucy does not want to feel "more intelligent" than her dad due to her only being a child. I would do an ecomap to sort out four different parts to focus on Sam which are disability, emotional intelligence, family, and support group.
