Pi's interreligious dialogue allows the readers to establish their own foundation of religion. Mount Carmel Academy seniors take World Religions. This course is meant to acknowledge how the Catholic faith entangles with other faiths around the world, and how all religions are based around one aspect: love. Pi's views on religion offers this spiritual opening to the reader, just as the senior religion course offers. If Mount Carmel Academy is willing to teach World Religions, the curriculum board should keep Life of Pi as an example of religions working in harmony with one another. Pi's religious views only consist of love when he states: "Bapu Gandhi said, 'All religions are true.' I just want to love God," I blurted out, and looked down, red in the face." (Martel 69).

Animal's Significance

The animal version of the survival story is much more bearable to read and witness compared to the story involving humans. The story with the animals is the better story, but the animals also are compared to the humans that were actually on board the lifeboat with Pi. The hyena is compared to the evil French cook that killed without remorse. The zebra was representative of the injured sailor. The orangutan was a representation of Pi's loving mother. Richard Parker was Pi. Pi was not scared of a Bengal Tiger but of himself and what he turned into. Explaining the story as animals shows the animalistic nature that humans possess. When put in certain situations, humans can react the same as a wild animal. Pi supports man being the most dangerous animal early in the novel: "Just beyond the ticket booth Father had painted on a wall in bright red letters the question: DO YOU KNOW WHICH IS THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IN THE ZOO? An arrow pointed to a small curtain. There were so many eager hands that pulled at the curtain that we had to replace it regularly. Behind it was a mirror. (Martel 31). This quote foreshadows the cruelty of man during Pi's lifeboat journey. Life of Pi should be on the reading list because it shows students the cruelty of humans, causing reflection of the inner self. Readers can not help but wonder what would happen if they were in Pi's place.

Imagination

Life of Pi allows readers to make important connections to imagination. In faith, Pi mentions that an atheist may one day take a leap of faith, but an agnostic, one who doubts, will never make that jump. Pi explains that lack of imagination hinders a person's life: "...and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story." (Martel 64). Pi explains that having no imagination causes people to miss out on life. In Pi's case, he uses imagination as a coping mechanism for what occurred on the lifeboat. If Pi did not have imagination he would not have been able to bear those 227 days in solitude with the sea. The imagination of Richard Parker pushed Pi to continue living. Without Pi's imagination, he would have died. Also, the story is more bearable to remember when he recalls the events of what happened on the lifeboat. Imagination is an important part of human existence. Life of Pi offers a sense of imagination. The imagery that Pi offers allows the reader to picture what was happening at every moment in time. This novel offers the importance of believing in something. During hard times, people turn to God just as Pi did. Pi shows students to use imagination as a coping mechanism to create a better story and to find God among all things.

Faith is a huge aspect in the novel as Pi begins to rely on God for the majority of his time on the lifeboat. Faith is a hard concept to understand as a young adult. Life of Pi allows readers the chance to understand how faith works. The whole enthralling story of Pi is believed by the readers. As for me, I believed every word Pi told through his story with the Bengal Tiger, Richard Parker. At the end of the novel, Pi reveals the true events of what took place on the lifeboat. In every Religion, there is a point where followers are asked to just believe in what is taught. Pi gives readers a chance to have faith by just believing in his story. Pi shows the willingness of humanity to jump into the unknown. Who cares what the actual, horrific story is, if we are inclined to believe in a better one. Pi explains faith in an understandable way by asking, "So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can't prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with the animals or without animals?" (Martel 317). This quote reveals that some aspects of life can not be proven no matter what, so, why not believe in a better story of wonder and awe of God. Life of Pi can not be taken off the reading list because it offers an explanation to what faith is; a hard concept for people to understand.
