So many beautiful and memorable times with Deng Eloi/Marissa, together with Deng Malou and Deng Rolly too. As we were growing up, we did chores together (while sina Manong were out on the streets working for democracy and justice), spent unforgettable vacations in Ilocos and played volleyball sa barangay (remember Whites and United Santiago Alvarez Volleyball Teams with Manong Nel as our coach) especially during summer. Tres Marias went to the same school during our elementary days. Eloi/Marissa was more adventurous for she went to UP High School after grade school graduation. Malou and I finished our elementary and secondary school at Stella Maris College. Joining the ACIL in college... after college, we both became teachers at the AdMU... spent time climbing the mountains of Mindoro to be with the Mangyans. We are still collecting and making memories, Deng. Thank you for these!

Met Eloi 33 years ago. I was in my Freshman year in AHS and lets just say the struggle is real pag dating sa Math. I needed help badly and had some faculty members tutor me after school. Looking back, palagay ko I enjoyed their company more than the tutoring. Kaya siguro ako nasipa ng maaga. Seriously, kung meron man ako memories that I treasure most in my 1 year in AHS it's meeting people like Eloi.

Never got the chance to be under "Ms.Bermio" but I would always see her often, last time I was having merienda w my Dad. Eloi asked him ano advise for retirement, he said "Be a bum".

Ngayong panahon ng Covid, we are reminded that we should treasure each day that goes by. We need to value out friends and family more than ever. Ngayon na yung panahon to stop and smell the damn roses. Mahirap mawalan ng pang amoy ngayon.

On the fateful and I guess life changing day in 1986, my friends and I went to the CLC room to pick an activity because we suddenly didn’t feel the desire to join the ateneo high school glee club.

There my life as a minister and not just a singer started. Little did I know we would have to trek kilometers to get to our kids for sat morning tutoring. Pawis tumatagaktak, twalya sa likod Syempre.

Then you started introducing to us these songs, played simply with beautiful lyrics and haunting melodies. Again, little did I realize that was already the preamble to a long friendship and ministry in Bukas Palad.

Now we both have kids. We both are reaching milestone birthdays. Between us two, a grand total of 110 years. :-)

The rich history of our friendship and connection is something time cannot break. Even miles apart and years of not talking is broken in a split second every time we see each other in person. Your beaming smile. My booming voice. What more do we need to ask for right?

So on this milestone birthday of yours, I wish you love peace and happiness. You May have it all of this already but I wish you more of it. You are in the very fabric of my life already and for that I truly feel blessed.

It is difficult to have a namesake na popular :) Kapag tatanungin "Ah ikaw pala si Eloi na may solo sa BP." "Ahh hindi po ako yun si Manang Eloi yun, hindi po ako soloista :)" But it is such a blessing too that my namesake is my Manang - kasintaray (kung kailangan) and kasingganda (uuuyy!) wahahaha pero mas mabait at mas pasensyosa.

I met you in 2007 at the old AHS. You were the chair of the Science Subject Area. Whenever you would speak during our plenaries, I could not help but admire you because you were so articulate, brave, and full of wisdom. I remember po that we used to teach 1B. Tapos po sobrang bait niyo po sa amin. That was the time that I got introduced to the motherly and caring Eloi. I had chances to be groupmates with you during our retreats in Tagaytay. There was one point that I just wanted to hug you because I felt your kindness and warmth. Ma’am, I have always heard good things about you—from your exceptional teaching to your boldness to fight for what’s just and right. It’s my honor to have met you and surrounded by your excellence. I hope that you continue to inspire more people around you. Now that you have a child of your own, I know that you will be a great mother.

You mentioned before that you wanted to live in Siargao, I’m here right now po. I hope you pursue that dream, Ma’am. It’s nice here. It’s now time to enjoy more your retirement with your family.

Dear Eloi,
We've known each other for twenty years now. I met you when I was a new teacher at the AHS. I remember admiring you for your warmth and independent thinking. A few years later you indulged my dream of wanting to dance like a boyband. Thank you for all those memorable times being classmates with Ate Meng in streetdancing (with one surprise dance move by Andoni showing his tummy; maybe he wanted to get into bellydancing). For that entire sem, you made it my happy place. Thank you also for unleashing your creativity during Mike's fortieth birthday. You lit up the room! Stay cool and creative always. Ma'am Eloi was one of my most favorite teachers in HS :) I still vividly remember her telling me that my Bart Simpson "Underachiever and proud of it!" sticker emblazoned on ny notebook was not something I should be proud of hahaha. She said it in such a way that it did not irk me but it made me think about the influence of what seemed like an innocuous sticker. Again, happy birthday to one of 4B 93's most beloved teachers :)

Ma'am Eloi was my 3-B AHS moderator and Chem teacher in the '90s (wag nalang banggitin ang year haha!). She was caring, considerate, and always encouraged us to do our best in our academic and co-curricular participations. My most memorable experience with her was when she prepared our class for our Timpalak Dula entry and we made it to the finals. That play also awakened in me a love for performing, and she believed enough in my talent to invite me to join her in Bukas Palad, for which I am eternally grateful for!

Ma'am Eloi was our 3rd year high school class moderator and Chemistry teacher. I first met her, quite obviously, 1st day of class in 3rd year. That would be school year 1991-1992. So it was one day in June, 1991 at the 3-B classroom. An approximation of what and where it is now can be seen in the photo. i have shared together with some of my classmates at that time. I have never kept it a secret that the reason why i took up Chemistry in college was because of Ma'am Eloi and how she opened my eyes to see the world in atoms and molecules. That's how good a teacher she is and how much of an influence she was to my life. My most memorable encounter would still be that first day of chem class. She had placed potassium permanganate in a petri dish and was throwing small pieces of tissue paper into the dish. Small explosion would occur. At the end of her speech, she threw the remaining tissue into the dish resulting in a huge explosion and Maam stepped out of the classroom for a bit. At the time i was in awe. Only after chem in college did i realize how dangerous that was and what exactly had happened. The marks on the blackboard were there the whole year. Needless to say i was hooked but didn't realize that there could have been serious injury at that time.

From becoming my club moderator in the AHS CLC, to becoming my class adviser in 3rd year HS, to becoming a good friend later on, you have always been a big influence in my life. Some memories may be shallow like learning how to use one’s diaphragm for class lectures to preserve one’s voice. Some may be as deep as our weekly visits to Balara. And some may be as fun as singing a Burt Bacharach thank you song that you taught us to sing to our class muse.
In the Ateneo, we were taught to become Men for Others. That was only possible because of an Eloi who was (and is) an excellent Mentor for Others.

Una tayong nagkakilala, Eloi, noong bago pa lang akong guro sa Ateneo High School. Naghahanap ka ng mga sasama sa Faculty Choir para kumanta sa school mass. Nilapitan mo ako at tinanong kung kumakanta ba ako at kung gusto kung sumali sa choir. Naaalala ko pa rin hanggang ngayon ang ngiti mo sa akin noong araw na iyon - paano ba naman ako makatatanggi? :) Iyon na ang simula ng ating pagkakaibighan.
Ang hindi ko malilimutang alaala sa pagkakaibigan natin, ay noong pumunta ka sa aking cubicle (sa lumang workroom pa!), noong Chair pa ako ng Araling Panlipunan. Naalala kong nagtsetsek pa ako ng LPs ng mga teachers sa dept ko. Pero, kailangan kong tumigil dahil sa isang malaking desisyon na gusto mong ibahagi sa akin. Sinabi ko sa iyo noon - sundin mo ang sinasabi ng puso mo, alam nito ang dapat mong gawin. Sa aking palagay, iyon na ang isa sa mga desisyon mong nagdala ng matinding ligaya sa buhay mo.
Ngayon, nagsisimula ka ng bagong kabanata. Katulad ng dati, isulat mo ang ninanais ng puso mo. Maligayang kaarawan, kaibigan!

This photo was taken 13 years ago (2008) at National Institute of Education in Singapore. Eloi and I were classmates in almost all courses and spent a year together in Singapore. But even before this, I got to know Ma'am Eloi through Manang Beth. Who would have thought that after so many years, Ma'am Eloi and I would work together in the AHS. Ma'am Eloi is a friend, my mentor, my confidante, my constant reminder to take care of myself...at marami pang iba. There are really so many fond memories I had with Ma'am Eloi but I would really treasure the time when we were in Singapore and just went around small shops to look and shop for little things like notepads, pencils, and school stuff with cute and uniqued designs.

I remember you welcoming me when I entered AHS in 1986. You were one of the pre-service facilitators then who accepted us (ir)regardless [sic] of what temperament we were. You showed us then what it was like to be an authentic Jesuit lay collaborator amid challenging times. Paraphrasing Ate Vi, "I cheris the" friendship ever since.

Palagay ko, una kitang nakilala sa isa sa mga kantahan para sa mga awitin ni Percy Chavez. Siyempre mas nagkakilala tayo dahil staff ka sa JVP ng Batch 7 at lalo na nang magturo ako sa AHS. At dahil pareho tayong G.I. (Genuine Ilocano) nagkaroon ako bigla ng "manang" at napakasarap pakinggan na tinatawag mo akong "ading."

Isang munting sandali na baka di mo na maalala ay nang magkatabi tayo sa dyip papunta sa pagdalaw sa mga nag-immersion sa Bagong Silangan. Nakumbinsi mo akong mag-aral noon at dahil sa iyo, nakatapos naman ako ng M.A. ko...

Maraming salamat sa musika, sa pagiging kapatid at kasama sa pakikibaka para sa Diyos at Bayan! Nagagalak ako na ipinanganak ka! Magsaya! Maging masaya! Patuloy sa pagbibigay-saya!

We met almost 30 years ago (1992) when I was a high school freshman without an org, and Bro. Dunne suggested that I join ACLC. I had no idea what that was, but I joined anyway (masunuring bata pa kasi hehe...). Having you as our moderator during those formative years left an indelible mark that influenced many of my life decisions that have led to works of service. I remember spending our Saturday mornings in EPHPHETA supposedly giving our time and knowledge as we teach children in need, but in reality leaving each time with more life lessons learned and values formed. Although you were never my teacher in the classroom, you have taught this heart of mine priceless pearls that I will treasure and live by forever. For all of these and your enduring friendship, I am grateful. For you, I pray to God for many more years of happiness and good health together with your family. I met Ma'am Eloi during my first year of teaching in the Ateneo High School. For some reason, nag-click lang po tayo, Ma'am Eloi. Since then, I've seen you as a brilliant and wise mentor, a cherished confidante, and a dear mother figure. I've learned so much from you.

I will always remember our dinner with Ate Meng and the Kims and Sir Andoni. It was a gathering of friends, and I felt so honored and grateful to have this kind of friendship with you.

Nagkakilala kami ni Ma’am Eloi last 2018 sa La Storta AJHS. Seatmate kami sa faculty room ni Ma’am for the entire school year. I’m always inspired by her dedication, love, and passion for work. My short stay in Ateneo AJHS was memorable and insightful because of the AJHS people and one of the best parts of that stay is Ma’am Eloi. One of the best memorable moments was when she shared her love of Little Prince (amaze na amaze ako andami nya collection!). I miss our kwentuhan about science, volcanoes, weather, books, cute abubots, food (cakes) and life in general.

Noong panahon na wala pang uniform ang mga estudyante sa AHS, sa mga koridor nito tayo unang nagtatawanan (habang pinaaalahahan n'yo rin kaming magkakaklase na mag-shush every now and then) -- nagsasabit ng mga parol o kaya gumagawa ng bulletin board. Hindi ko makakalimutan ang hagalpak ng tawa ninyo sa mga biruan namin; maging ang tahimik ninyong pagkatameme sa mga hirit naming mahirap react-an. I was in awe always how that same cheerful laughter is the same soothing voice that can be heard singing at Ateneo masses. #blessed

Sumali kami sa CLC sa Ateneo High at ikaw ang moderator namin. Ikaw ang nagbukas ng pinto para makapagturo kami tuwing Sabado sa mga paslit sa may Ephpheta. Babagtasin ang kalye sa likod ng lumang Aurora Market patungo sa isang talampas na natatanaw ang Marikina, noong wala pang Katipunan Flyover. You were an inspiration to many young students to pursue our dreams and also see bigger world beyond our comfort zones.

Like Palan, I first met you my chingu as our resource person during the AHS pre-service seminar for new teachers in 1986. I still remember you wearing a navy blue blouse with little sailboats printed on it. We had the pre-service at the Principal's Conference Room. I can't remember exactly what you talked about but you made quite an impression because you looked neat, confident, and VERY accomodating. You were also very cheerful and looked so young! Akala ko magkaedad lang tayo! Who would have thought that we will hit it off (5 years older ka sa akin and you belong to another department) and become bosom friends! Bffs!!! Eloi, you are my best friend, my mother confessor :), my ate, my mentor, my psychologist/counselor, my admonitor, my IDOL (because you can do almost anything and everything EXCEPT drive). Haha. Much of what I have become as a teacher, I am proud to say I learned from you. Memorable? Naku andami because our friendship spans 36 years already! But what probably sealed our friendship was when you and Andoni moved heaven and earth to help me and my family when we went through a crisis December of 2001. Kaibigan ko talaga kayo for better or for worse. Siempre memorable din the two occasions we went abroad together. Nasubukan talaga ang pagkakaibigan!

2016 was the year we got to work together in the Main Workroom in the same cluster. We also handled the same classes with you as their Science Teacher and me as their GC. I think it was May 5th 2010 (first day pa nga non ng in-service yatat). I was sitting alone in one of the cubicles at the main building of the Ateneo High School and was waiting for my then SAC Sir Ric. Mam Eloi approached me, introduced herself, and welcomed me to the Science Subject Area. Pero ito na nga, pag may Mam Eloi, may Mam Meng. Oo, kinaya ko yong dalawa (hahahaha), mga bUngga sila! Looking back, knowing what Mam Eloi has achieved and what PROWESS she possesses, na inspire ako sa kanyang mapagkumbabang loob. Siya (at si Mam Meng) ang nag.approach sa akin.
Naging SAC ko si Mam Eloi for 2 years. It was a different level of learning experience, yong pati puso mo may natutunan.
Most memorable na time ko ni Mam Eloi was she was there in my lowest point. Siguro natandaan ni Mam Eloi yong time na siya mismo ang nakapansin. Siya mismo ang nangumusta. Siya mismo gumawa ng paraan. Alam na alam ko na di ko yon kakayanin mag-isa.
Hihingi na rin ako ng tawag kay Mam Eloi kasi dama ko na di ako nagpaalam ng maayos. Naisip ko kasi na para siyang nanay na sasabihan akong wag umalis. Pero, kahit na andito pa rin ako abroad, may mga panahon talaga na nagbibigay pa rin siya ng mga payo at kalinga. At pinaka.bUngga na payo ni Mam Eloi sa akin ay, IPAGDASA MO YAN. Ito ay patungkol sa akin love life (hahahahaha).
Mam Eloi, thank you po sa inyong paggabay sa akin. Professionally, alam kong you are one of the BIGGEST factors to my success. Personally, you showed me how things are done right. I pray for your continued good health, happiness in your life especially your growing family, and strength to inspire and move others. Happy birthday, Mam Eloi.

Can't even remember when it was when we first met. Was it at Stella Maris? At the Ateneo College? Nor can I remember how we, as new teachers at the AHS, became BFFs, along with Meng and Malen. But even if we're no longer all working together and we hardly get to see each other these days, thank you for always being there when it matters most. I'm looking forward to being able to spend some time together again soon. We still have to make that group travel plan a reality while we still can.

Before I became Ma'am Eloi's colleague, I knew her as Ma'am Beth's sister. I would see her visit Ma'am Beth when I was still teaching in the AGS. Little did I know that I was going to transfer to the High School. Ma'am Eloi and I became part of the same unit when the Ateneo Junior High School was formed. We were both in the La Storta Cluster.

What I will never forget about Ma'am Eloi is her thoughtfulness. She goes out of her way to take care of those around her. In October of 2017, she and RD (and maybe with the help of some other Science teachers - I'm not really sure who else helped) prepared a birthday banner for me. It was a Hello Kitty banner that took a lot of time and effort to put together. Each Hello Kitty face had a small cloth ribbon glued to it, and a string of fairy lights brought that banner to life. I remember feeling overwhelmed with gratitude that they went out of their way for me despite our busy schedules. A month prior, she gave me an early birthday present - a paper bag containing a tin can filled with Hello Kitty goodies. She always thinks of those around her without calling attention to herself. She was always taking care of others quietly. Thank you, Ma'am Eloi.

On the day of your 60th birthday, I'd like to send you warm birthday greetings. I hope that despite the distance that separates you from your friends, you will still be able to feel how grateful we are that you were born. You are a blessing to so many people. I first met Ma’am Eloi in the Ateneo. I could not remember exactly when but it must have been during those moments when the Grade School and High School got together. For a long time, Ma’am Eloi had been for me closely identified as the younger sister of Manang Beth. It was only in Singapore when we finally had moments together apart from her sister. We share a common experience as students at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang University. Together with Marielle, Malou, Carol and Ria, we were the first ones sent there. What an adventure we had! Happy Birthday Ma’am Eloi. Just like what I usually say to Carol when I greet her on her birthday, I’ll gladly treat you to Lau Pa Sat when times are better. Cheers!

HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY MA'AM ELOI!

I'll follow the guide questions of Ma'am Meng po! Hehe. I think the first time I met Ma'am Eloi was back in my first year of teaching. She had to consult with me about an evaluation of a faculty member (O di ba, first year of teaching hinihingan na ng input? At always ready in action kahit on leave siya... ) and I distinctly remember it was in the library pa nga. 📚 She even gave me one of her baked cupcakes and I loved it since carrot cupcake yata siya. 🧁️ Hehe.

Ma'am Eloi will always be the first that comes to my mind when I think about the word mentor and seryoso ako doon. 👩‍🏫 I guess I learned a lot how important it is to have someone with experience to guide you. For her to go out of her way to help younger faculty! I personally regretted not taking advantage of that during that time dahil mahiyain po ako! Hehe. To my surprise back then, Ma'am Eloi was also my tita's classmate! Literal na little people connected in this small world! Hehehe.

We met Teacher Eloi when she became our class moderator for SY1987-88. It was a start of a memorable relationship that eventually led to what we can now consider as being good friends. One of the memorable events we remembered with Teacher Eloi was when we had a school sanctioned field trip with the batch. The bus assigned to our class did not make it due to engine trouble. Some of our classmates were distributed to the busses of other sections while others had no choice but to commute. As the buses passed our classmates walking towards the bus station, one by one they stopped and the G-boys riding those busses went down and requested to join the group commuting to CCP. Although it was nothing new to us, it was a sight seeing some of my “conio” classmates take public transport for the first time. We marveled at the time when close to 40 students were waddling the public city streets of Metro Manila and one Granny Goose, trying to direct her flock It was one of those experiences that bonded us as a class, not only with our classmates, but with our moderator as well. To show our appreciation for her that year, we decided to gift her an acoustic guitar. Thinking back, We didn’t even remember how we were able to raise money for it as we were just high school students that time. For sure, kasama dun yung pag-ipon ng mga empty softdrink bottles para makuha yung deposit sa canteen. Well, all our efforts were worth it as we were amazed at her reaction upon presenting the gift. Anyways, we just want to greet Eloi a very happy birthday and looking forward to continuing our friendship for years to come. Let’s Go 3G!!!

Ma'am Eloi was our wedding ninang and also my boss, colleague, favorite kasamang kumain and kakuwentuhan. My favorite memories with Ma'am Eloi would be eating her food and all the cookies she baked, and the kuwentuhan, and all the kindness and warmth and the youthful good vibes she always brings with her. It's hard for me to believe that she's 60 because it seems like she knows all the current popular songs, the best places to eat, and the best places to go.

Mam Eloi, you were our class moderator for section 3B for school year 1989-1990. No specific day specific day stands out but rather, the entire year was memorable for me as you are one of the very few high school teachers that I still remember until this day. That alone means a lot.

Happy birthday Mam Eloi! 60 is the new 30. It is a point in our life that we are given another chance to pursue a new adventure that we only dreamt of when we were still busy with work.

I really enjoyed the school adventures we had back then at the Ateneo and I do hope that whatever adventures you will be facing moving forward would be as enjoyable and fulfilling.

Again, happy birthday and thank you for all the memorable adventures we had. Definitely, I wouldn't be the same if a Ms. Bermio did not happen to cross my path. Looking forward to still be friends for many more years to come, God bless.

1. Bukas Palad would often rehearse in my parents’ Loyola Heights residence in the 1980s. I learned to recognize Eloi’s powerful and distinctive soprano as one of the voices that defined the BP sound, which also means I am among millions of Filipinos who hear Eloi’s voice in our heads when we pray. 2. Eloi is my friend, family friend, and better half of my best man. 3. When Andoni would ask me to hang out with him in the corridor between classes so that he could admire Eloi from afar as she walked from one room to another (not really my fave encounter—but fun times for sure!) 4. Happy, happy birthday Eloi! Not sure if I ever told you this but when facing an ethical dilemma, yours is one of the voices I hear arguing in my head. Thank you for being a part of my conscience.
