TED Talk Script

Intro.

Jace:

Hi, My name is Jace and this is Yonah. (point at Yonah)

Yonah:

Our issue is on marine pollution. We decided that we would collaborate and do a TED talk.

What is marine pollution?

Jace:

Did you know, only 2% of the earth’s ocean is protected and that each year 100,000 sea mammals are killed because of this?Marine pollution is a type of pollution that occurs in the ocean. It is when the water is not fit to be used or lived in. It is basicly things that enter the ocean and do harm.

Yonah:

It is caused by trash, sewage, farm-runoff, oil spills, toxic chemicals, construction site waste, thermal shocks and waste that are from factories.

Why should we care?

Jace:

One reason it is a big issue and we should care for it is that the ocean provides us with things and help us keep our world balanced.70% of oxygen comes from marine plants, 97% of the earth’s water supply is contained in the ocean and 30% of carbon dioxide emissions produced by humans are absorbed by the ocean. Oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein people eat. They’re the most promising source of new medicines to combat cancer, pain and bacterial diseases. Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce the impact of climate change.

Yonah:

The second reason it is a big issue and that we should care for it is because it can affect a lot of things. If the fish eat the plastic or trash it can break the whole food chain. The fish eats the plastic and bigger fish eats the smaller fish, then either we fish it up or bigger fish eat them. Once plastic enters a fish body, it stays in it’s guts. Next, the bigger fish will die because of the plastic. If this keeps happening, then the whole eco-system will not be balanced and the food chain won’t work. Also, sea animals will overpopulate because of the un-balanced food chain and some animals might even go extinct.

Yonah:

One day I was listening to the song The Ocean by Mike Perry, according to the website Genius.com they said that the song has a warm and nice feeling about the ocean and I want that feeling back!

How can we take action?

Jace:

According to a survey I sent out recently to year 6’s, 35% of the people who answered my survey said that they would want to help but don’t know how to. So here we are going to tell you how you can help! These things are not very hard to do, I bet you guys can do a least one of these.

Yonah: (Jace will elaborate on each point if needed)

To take action you can:

Mind Your Carbon Footprint and Reduce Energy Consumption.

Make Safe, Sustainable Seafood Choices.

Use Fewer Plastic Products.

Help Take Care of the Beach.

Don't Purchase Items That destroy Marine Life.

Be an Ocean-Friendly Pet Owner.

Support Organizations Working to Protect the Ocean.

Influence Change in Your Community Raise awareness.

Jace:

Any questions?

For our action we have made a website to raise awareness. Right now, Yonah will be passing the links to the website out to you.

Thank you for listening! Hope you really think about it!

http://www.planetaid.org/blog/how-ocean-pollution-affects-humans

https://marine-conservation.org/what-we-do/advocate/why-we-protect-our-oceans/

http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/take-action/10-things-you-can-do-to-save-the-ocean/

Polluted water

By Jennifer Stefanow
