Laura and I got quite a lot done this week. We went through the script with Rachael, our DOP and discussed every shot. The film is a contrast between the real world and the virtual world. In the virtual world the colours will be bright, crisp, and sharp as everything in the virtual is 'perfect' and everything in the real world is quite dull, not as sharp, quite flat. We discussed ideas such as subtle contrasts between the two worlds, such as mugs being spilt over and in the virtual mugs will be perfectly placed. We discussed if Amie, the director, wanted to use cine bars, as this will effect the way the film is shot. We agreed yes that cine bars will make it look more cinematic and professional. The lighting in this film is going to be very naturalistic, no gels etc. The pops of colour will come from props, costume and set. Laura and I discussed about how we wanted to split the edit, and we thought it would be best to edit a world each. I'm editing the real world, which is where the colours will be dull, more faded, to mimic Jamie's feelings towards the real world. I'm really excited about the first scene as it's going to be a tracking long shot of Jamie walking through the restaurant, and Rachael and I had an idea to synchronize the movements of everyone in the restaurant to match up with the music, I think this would just be more pleasing to the audience. Laura and I had a couple of sessions with the technicians to go over colour grading and to learn about graphics. The colour grading session with Connoll was great as I'm not too confident with colour grading, but Connoll said it takes a lot of playing around to get exactly what you're looking for. He talked through all of the edit tools for colour grading which was very helpful as I was unsure on a lot of it. The graphics session with Ben was really helpful, as Laura and I have to make graphics of a games screen (I've inserted photos of the screens we have made) I really enjoyed doing this. My idea for the trailer was to have Jamie's speech from the first scene over the top of what's happening in the real world, but the ADR for that scene hadn't been done yet. We played around with different scenes and bits of dialogue, but I just didn't like anything we came up with. I didn't want to hand anything in I wasn't happy with. We finally came up with something (I still wasn't that impressed by it, but it was the best one we came up with all day). We sent it to Amie and she said she only wanted about a 10-15 second trailer. Amie and I said we liked the ending of the trailer we had made, (see trailer post) which was the alarm clock waking Theo up and the poster I made. So we kept the ending and decided to have opposite shots;  Meg playing the game with Theo behind, Theo playing the game with Meg behind. 

The editing process was stressful, but I really enjoyed it. For the rough cut, I had every scene I was editing in the timeline, and my edit alone was over 20 minutes, and Laura's edit was about 6 minutes. So the first task was to cut about 11 minutes of the film. I'm really glad Amie was sat with us during that process as I didn't want to cut scenes of the film without her permission. We also went through the script together and cut bits of scenes eg. we cut a lot of dialogue from Emma and Lily's scene. The scene was nearly 2 minutes long, and we cut it down to just over a minute. Clare came and watched the edit a few times and each time gave us ideas on how we can cut it down for example, the car scene where Jamie bumps his head on the car window. Amie really wanted to keep that shot but realistically it didn't move the story forward and it was almost a minute long, so we ended up cutting out that shot. 

Sound editing was really difficult as everything had to be spot on. The sound can make or break a film. It was difficult making sure all of the levels the same for speech and background noises were all at the same level. I honestly didn't realise how important good sound is until I worked on this film.
