Has there ever been a moment when someone’s assumptions about your identity didn’t match who you feel you are? How did you react?

Yes, there has been. There have been several times when people, without knowing me or even speaking to me, perceive me as being unkind or self-absorbed. Whenever this happens I try to get to know that person and allow them to get to know me so that they can gain a better understanding of who I am and change their idea of me.

Why is it important to look at overlapping identities instead of trating people as if they belong to only one group? How can this thinking help create a fairer society?

The reason it’s important to look at overlapping identities is because people are not just classified as one thing. They may be affected by their gender, race, class, or other parts of who they are at once. If we only see one part, we will miss the full picture of their struggles or needs. Thinking this way helps us include everyone better and create a fairer society where people get the right support and equal chances.

What qualities or actions do you think are needed to become an activist?

Becoming an effective activist is cultivating essential internal qualities and committing to external actions aimed at systemic change. The foundation of activism is empathy and courage, which fuel the long-term perseverance demonstrated by figures like Nelson Mandela. This mindset must be paired with concrete actions, beginning with rigorous self-education to understand the problem. Effective activists then leverage strategic organization and collaboration to build power, and master effective communication, exemplified by Greta Thunberg, to mobilize public support. Finally, success relies on a balanced mix of non-violent direct action and dedicated political engagement to ensure lasting systemic change is cemented into law.

Thinking about what the song expresses, why do you believe cultural conflicts happen and sometimes grow into violence?

Cultural conflicts, like the one in U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday," grow into violence because they are rooted in a clash of "core identities" caused by a history of systemic grievance. The issue in Northern Ireland was one between those who identified as British (Unionists/Protestants) and those who identified as Irish (Nationalists/Catholics). When one group feels their fundamental identity and political rights are threatened or unjustly suppressed, like the Catholic minority felt through political and economic discrimination, it creates resentment and space for conflict.

This conflict then spirals into violence through a cycle of vengeance and retaliation. An initial act of bloodshed, like Bloody Sunday, is not merely an incident but a powerful grievance that fuels recruitment and justifies the next retaliatory attack. The song's anguished cry, "How long must we sing this song?", highlights this vicious circle where both sides prioritize defending their identity and seeking revenge,.

How do you think globalization influences the way artists from different parts of the world express their ideas and emotions?

It simultaneously promotes hybridization and provides unprecedented access. The easy flow of information and movement of people means artists worldwide can blend local traditions, symbols, and narratives with international styles, materials, and digital media, leading to complex, layered, and multi-referential works that reflect a globally aware identity. Furthermore, global platforms allow artists to share their personal, local expressions of joy, suffering, or political critique instantly with a worldwide audience, allowing their work to participate in a larger, intercultural dialogue on universal human conditions.
