· The British settlers were governed by both morality and laws that forbade the killing of the innocent.’

· Tasmania: settlers felt abandoned by the British and for 5 years had no food deliveries which ended in them eating and hunting kangaroos etc.- psychologically affected them- depersonalised the convicts and free settlers alike. Also, having to compete for the same resources put them into unwanted conflict

· 7 employees of William Lawson killed and scalped at Bathurst by indigenous people

· concept of genocide very new term 1944 (UN)- before this, the white settlers didn’t even have a genocidal viewpoint

· settlers manipulated the land and allowed the aboriginal people to use the natural resources – modern resources

· Contemporary sources regarding the Tasmania genocide fail to mention the modern concept of genocide that was later adopted by post-war nations under the UN convention.

· The British Government failed to support the aborigines as a consequence of imperialist attitudes during the colonisation period of Australia from 1788-1901.

· Aborigines were tribal nomads who resorted to resistance due to the misunderstanding of inevitable British colonisation of the territory. Unfortunately, this retaliation led to the ‘Black War’ in Tasmania culminating in the near destruction, pillage and ethnic cleansing of these peoples. An inevitable outcome. Counter claim: Prostitution not only occurred in British colonies, but also in aboriginal communities – both sides were barbaric but the British would become dominant in the settlement of Terra Australis. A necessary genocide at the time in order to cultivate the Australian land as a consequence of British colonialism and European imperialism. Now the ‘Black War is considered genocidal, when in the 19th century this was not so.

· An opposition of ‘genocide’: it was never in official legislation so it can’t be proven that there was an intent to specifically target indigenous people

· Indigenous people can now benefit from the developed nation – infrastructure, healthcare etc.

· Myle Creek massacre- the perpetrators were prosecuted which shows that the British cared about justice
