Normally, a woman ovulates two weeks prior to her menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs when one mature egg leaves a woman's ovaries and makes it's way to her fallopian tube.

Next, fertilization begins when a man's sperm attaches itself to the woman's mature egg, in the fallopian tube. When the sperm meets the egg, the sperm penetrates the egg. During this time, the genetic makeup of the baby is created and the sex is determined. The fertilized egg now becomes a zygote.

The zygote contains 46 chromosomes, 23 from the female and 23 from the male. 22 of the chromosomes are identical and the 23rd is not, this is the sex chromosome - it determines if the baby will be a boy or a girl. A female zygote has XX chromosomes and a male zygote has XY chromosomes.

Lastly, the zygote will make its way to the uterus during implantation. This journey normally takes up to two weeks. Once the zygote attaches itself to the uterus, it then becomes the embryo.
