12. ( Author; Lois Lowry) I think the author wrote the story because they wanted to make a picture in somebody's mind for what that time was really like. The author really described the scenes and explained what the character's thoughts and opinions for what they should do, and exactly how they thought about their situation. There are people today who wonder how people got through the war, and how they felt when the war ended. Annemarie was a good character to describe the thoughts out in her head, as the author wrote. The author mentions for Annemarie, how much she cares, misses, and respects for her peers. Lois Lowry has some good detail at his fingertips for being able to write the setting throughout parts of the book. The few main characters this author includes he reflects to the war and shows true emotion. Another reason the author includes different emotions of the characters is so the reader can understand, again, what the character is going through, how they explain it to people and how that is converted into someone's mind. So, I think the author is trying to draw a picture and have the reader visualise how that scene is. How the author may think is, "let's draw a picture so they can see what is going to happen, or how this scene really is," because the author may see pictures in his mind, then try to describe it to the reader. (Sorry it may be too long although you say it can never be too long...)

This book reminded me of the book called Shadow. In the book called Shadow there was a little girl and her grandfather the setting was in a war, so there were guards that wanted to take their house, but her grandfather did not want that to happen. He went and talked to the soldiers, but the soldiers killed him. That part reminded me of when they killed Peter, because he was trying to help his country. Shadow had another part of the book that reminded me of Number The Stars . When the girls finds a bomb sniffer dog named Shadow, and it saves her life when he finds a bomb on the side of the road. That reminded me of when the soldiers stopped Annmarie in the woods and they had there dogs with them. The book Shadow also had a part in the book that reminded me of when the soldiers stopped her in the woods and searched through her things .Shadow had soldiers come up to the girl wanting to see her backpack and her dog.

This time I choose reading response, choice board number five. if the setting in this story changed, to a different location, even in a different time period, the story would change completely. This story would change entirely because, it takes place in WWII, 1940-1943. If the year changed to 1939, or above 1944, the war would have ended, the Johansson's would not have to hide the Rosens, and Peter and Lise might be alive if it was before 1940. If the story was after 1944, the war would be over. the Rosens might be home, everything would be well, and happy.
