Gold to Indians is a symbol of purity and it allows the bride to enter into a new household financially stable because that is her source of income. Gold is an investment, they don't look at it as if they were spending money. The brides family brings most of the gold to the wedding to show off wealth. It is culturally engrained into Indian families that gold is a necessity.
