         <description><![CDATA[<div>Alpers disease is a progressional mitochondrial dna depletion syndrome that is characterized by three co-occurring clinical symptoms dementia, seizures poor motor controls, and liver disease. It is caused by mutations in the gene mitochondrial DNA polymerase POLG. one in 200,000 people have it. At birth the baby would be showing no signs of the disease and they develop after a few weeks to a year. To test for the diseases they test the polg gene. 80 percent of people with it develop it in the first few years of her life and 20 percent develop it between 2 and 25.
