Initial portrait of Dorian Gray

Basil paints a portrait of the very handsome Dorian Gray. Dorian loves the way his image of beautiful youth is portrayed in the delicate strokes of Basil's masterpiece. However, Basil says that he could never display the painting because he sees too much of himself in it. Dorian wishes that he could stay youthful like the painting forever and soon becomes jealous of the man in the painting.
"Too much of yourself in it...this is a young Adonis, who looks as if he was made out of ivory and rose leaves."
Expression change

Dorian Gray looks back at his portrait and after a quick glance, he notices something is different. He sees that his facial expression portrayed when it was first painted has changed. His mouth seems to show a sense of cruelty about it that makes Dorian have to do a double-take. He does, in fact, see a changed portrait right before his eyes. Wondering how this could happen, Dorian begins to reflect on his recent actions. The portrait now shows on the outside the sins that he carries on the inside.
"The expression looked different. One would have said that there was a touch of cruelty in the mouth. It was certainly strange." Page 58

Evil and aging appearance

Years go by and Dorian is more and more influenced by the yellow book. He lives a life full of cruelty and pleasure. His external appearance continuous to stay youthful and vibrant while the image in the portrait becomes older and ugly. It shows the morality behind Dorian's actions. Instead of changing his ways after seeing his sin right in from of him, Dorian mocks the painting. He is glad that he gets to be young and beautiful and makes fun of the burdens that the portrait must bare. Free from the grips of reality, Dorian pursues his desire for knowledge and indulgence in life.
"He would examine the minute care,...the signs of sin or the signs of age."
Blood stain appears

After Dorian murders Basil, he blackmails Alan Campbell into disposing the body. While he is hard at work at the scene of the crime, Dorian goes to check on his painting. He was shocked to find a drop blood on the portrait. It was located on one of the hands to signify Dorian stabbing Basil with a knife and leaving Dorian's hand marked with Basil's blood. The portrait is now showing physical changes that have come to life. Each addition to the portrait shows the changes in Dorian and represent some sin that Dorian has committed. He is evolving to become more and more immoral.
"What was that loathsome red dew that gleamed,...as though the canvas had sweated blood?"
Page 108-109

Dorian hopes to find positive changes to the painting after changing his ways. The portrait has a new expression representative of Dorian's true self and newly spilled blood that seemed to drip to other parts, consuming the painting. Each life that has been taken after Basil's death is somehow related back to Dorian. Their blood that was shed is represented with the larger blood stain. His sins and their guilt build up inside of him to where he wonders if he should confess all of his terrible actions. He knows the public will shame him and no longer love him for his beauty. Dorian's sins will make his youthful beauty seem insignificant.
“He could see no change, save in the eyes there was a look of cunning, and in the mouth the curved wrinkle of the hypocrite."
"It seemed to have crept...blood even on the hand that had not held the knife."

Dorian becomes overwhelmed by what he sees in the portrait of his corruption. He wants to get rid of the constant reminders of his sins, so he stabs the portrait. He wishes to kill the portrait and the pain of his past. Peace would finally come to an unusual life full of hypocrisy and agony. The portrait changes back to its original condition and leaves an aged Dorian dead on the floor in front of it. Dorian received the sin and corruption that was placed on the man in the painting for so many years.
"When they entered, they found hanging upon the wall...in all of the wonder of his exquisite youth and beauty."
