Summary of "Let Me Concentrate"

`This weeks reading focused on repletion in music and the different psychological effects it can have for the listener. When talking about repletion in music, we are not referring to a tone that doesn't change, or an exact copy without any kind of growth or evolving. In music there is a general split between two different orientations, variation and repetition. Variation is often referred to as symphony or sonata form , and repletion is reggae, techno and R&B. Repletion is considered a psychological operation, although the music seems to be unchanging it causes your perceptions to change. In this chapter one example used to discuss repetition is Four Organs, one chord that is essentially E eleventh from 1970 that is played between four different Farsfia organs that changes emphasis as the song progresses. This is changing the implication of the chord and the perception of the listener, even though it is repeating the same chord over and over again. The author compares this to playing peekaboo with a child, its the same repetitive motion over and over again but you're chaining your hiding spot so the child doesn't get bored and expect where you're going to hide. Repetition in music should do just this, "The Blue Jay Way" by the Beatles is a song that I listen to that shows repetition, in both its words and its accompanying music this song changes without actually changing. There is a group of phrases throughout the entirety of the song that repeat, but the inflection and tone of the voices singing them change, causing the listener to have fluctuating feelings during. The accompanying music also repeats the same sounds over and over again, but gets louder, quieter, faster and slower in certain points, changing the mood of the song throughout the entire piece.

"If all music is a ritual -which it all is in some form- then lets sat the variation celebrates the proliferation of life: the theme that binds the variations together implies a unifying power, maybe even a theistic one. Repetition is a little more about music itself, and thus a little more about humankind alone." - Ratliff

"The music seems to stay put while you (or your perceptions) change. Then you stay put while it changes. It suggests infinity or eternity basically. But only by a distant representation. We couldn't have actual infinity or eternity in art. We would hate it."- Ratliff
