For example if someone does something repeadetly that is demonstrating they are not worthy of a second chance , or third, then forgiveness is not appropraite in some matters. In Night, Elie has his mother and sister taken away, and killed. The people who orchastrated this are heartless, and have no just reason. Elie would not be pressured to forgive them, what they did was past forgiveness.

Now in some situations this weakness is unfourtunately addiction, but in NIght, Elie's father is weak and frail. He has more trouble then his son with the day to day activities and all the physical pressure he is having to endure. In this circumstance, his son has to be strong for his father, and recognize that he is not as strong. Family I see if unbreakable. No matter what arguments you get in or disagreements, you always come back together as one because you know you love eachother and only want the best for each and everyone in the family. This is related with Elie and his father. They do things together, side by side, trying to get out together and survive together. They have a deal to stick together and their love and strong bond from day 1 of father/son relationship makes their battle so much stronger to lean on eachother. -Sam Sciarra

Elie gives him the knife and spoon and the father continues saying how 🤬 isn't there and is saying he cant believe they are going through something like that.

Hope is definitely necessary for survival because majority of people when put in in difficult situations, need a reason to keep going, cope, and not give up. Hope drives someone to continuing surviving with a goal to search for. An example of this in Night is majority of people in the concentration camps, continue to survive and keep going because the believe that 🤬 is watching over them and will help them soon and is using this as a challenge. Hope can be misleading because not all things people hope for can come true. It is also possible that hope can be put in other's heads which can be false and maybe even manipulative.
-Erin Echegaray-Matthews

What makes humans more developed than animals is our level of understanding, how we react to things, and how we think about ourselves and others. This is shown in Night when the Nazi's first invaded the town and people knew that they must behave a certain way and react in one way to survive. Some basic animal instincts that appear in regular life are emotion, danger, the need to eat, and wanting to find shelter in circumstances where they just need to survive. This is shown by the prisoners in the concentration camps. Many, when given food, will scarf it down because they have a need to eat and the knowledge that this could be there last meal at any point. The need to find shelter is shown in how they rely heavily on each other for safety and warmth. The prisoners reaction to danger is also a basic instinct. Many resort to a fight, flight, or freeze reaction to what happens in the chapters and how they are treated.
-Megan MacWade

Faith is something that one or more people strongly believe in. Religious faith is about believing in something or someone who is above oneself and can be considered 🤬-like. Personal faith is about believing in someone or something but without that tie to an entity unlike one on Earth. To have blind faith is to completely believe in something so strongly that you can't be swayed another way and you have complete trust in that thing. Something that would cause someone to lose their faith is that some type of traumatic situation happened and that person felt like their faith wasn't their for them. All of this about religion ties to the story Night. Eliezer is Jewish and believes in 🤬 very strongly at the beginning of the book and he is seen wanting to learn more. He trusted that he would forever be protected by his 🤬 and those around him who were tied to 🤬. But now Eliezer is losing his faith. In the chapters he thinks about how if 🤬 were real he wouldn't be allowing all these horrible things to happen and he would save them from what is happening. But he doesn't. Eliezer and his father don't even participate in their religious traditions anymore either.
-Megan MacWade

(replying to Erin) I agree with your statement that the people in concentration camps needed that hope to keep them going because what they were going through was awful. Your point about hope being misleading is also very accurate and is shown a lot throughout the chapters. Eliezer hopes and hopes to anyone that his family will be spared and that everything will turn out okay. His hope was especially strong with his religion, but you can see how that slowly disappears because what he was told isn't working. He hoped and yet still no one came.
-Megan MacWade

(replying to Saranya) I agree with your statement about how wanting power and to be in control is a natural human instinct. We, as humans, crave that control and want to keep it for as long as possible when we get it. It can make us change our behaviors and act violent or rash. This shown when prisoners were beaten, experimented on, taunted, etc. All these people gained this power and they used it to further their hatred. You're point about the SS using that fear to control the prisoners because they feared them was also very good. Fear ran these people's lives for a very long time and the guards enjoyed it.
-Megan MacWade

We are really good at solving problems are making things to help solve problems.

Lilah Maus:
In Night I think that there are examples of self preservation but also examples that show humans are caring towards others. In chapter 5 after selection Elie states, "At that moment, the others did not matter! They had not written me down." This shows that even Elie who has tried to help his dad, has fell into a selfish trap. Because when it comes down to life and death many people will want to help themselves before others if it keeps them alive. An example of other people being caring is when the veteran was giving them advice about selection, they said, "Don't walk slowly, run! Run as if you had the 🤬 at your heels! Don't look at the SS. Run, straight in front of you!"

He paused and then added:

"And most important, don't be afraid!" this quote shows that there are people there who know the drill and want to help the others stay alive.

Lilah Maus: Having hope in a situation like the holocaust is essential for survival. If you are believing that you will get our it the situation this is motivation will help to keep on living and trying your best each day. Once you lose hope that things will work out and get better it is like you are giving up and will suffer the consequences. Hope can be misleading though because it is not certain that things will improve. You may have the hope that it will but then bad things can still happen. To relate hope to our current situation, the coronavirus I am hopefull that all of this will improve by the summer so that things will go back to normal and we can have good summer filled with friend and fall spport but becaus hope is not certain this situation could continue.

The point in life where a child is responsible for taking responsibility for their parent occurs when the parent is not mentally or physically stable enough to take care of themselves. At this point in time, the child must try and understand that their parent can no longer support them as they did before and needs their help. For instance, this happens in chapter 2 when Madame Schachter kept screaming about seeing a fire when there wasn't one. Madame Schachter's child held onto her hand and tried to make an attempt to calm her down to reassure her that there wasn't a fire. Madame Schachter's child took responsibility for taking care of his mother who was losing her mind. This showed the role reversal where the child took responsibility and comfort the parent instead of the other way around. -Tammy K

I believe that there are certain things that people do that are way past forgiving. When people do things with evil intent, I believe it is past forgiveness after they have harmed someone because of their actions. The people who suffered from the inhumane acts of the holocaust should not feel as if they need to forgive. Those who helped with this unforgettable event have nothing but hatred in their minds and should not expect forgiveness from anyone. The amount of mental and physical pain they caused millions should not be taken lightly. In Night, Elie and his family are separated and tortured in the concentration camps and experience many deaths around him. Elie should not feel the need to forgive those who did this to him because the amount of pain it has caused him. Someone who could murder millions based off their religion/kill innocent people should not expect forgiveness and must live with themself knowing that they did such an evil act.-Tammy K

I believe humans are normally caring towards one another but in such an extreme situation like the holocaust it changes the way people think. In the text most people are worried about themselves and staying alive and dont really seem to care if other get selected as long as they dont. Elie seems to be the only one worried about another person besides himself, in this case his father. During these traumatic times Elie has grown closer with his father than ever before and wants not only himself to come out alive but also him.

There are certain things that are past forgiveness but it also depends on your relationship with that person. If you barely know someone and they do something that affects you but doesnt like really damage your life I think you still wont forgive that person because like one of the first things they did to you was something that damaged your life no matter how small. In the text when they are at concentration camps and all the Jews are getting tortured until their death, this is for sure something that can never be forgiven even if none of your loved ones got killed I believe that just being in the precence of another human being killed over their religion is never ok and is way past forgivness.

Wanetta O: Faith is a strong connection and belief in something. There is a difference between religious faith and personal faith. Religious faith is having beliefs associated with something you consider God. Personal faith can be faith in yourself or trust in someone close to you. Blind faith is an unrealistic hope in something that can cloud your judgment. Many things can cause a person to lose personal and religious faith. If you have nothing pushing you forward and no hope that you’ll survive a situation, you can lose the faith in yourself. You can lose religious faith if you feel like God wasn’t there for you in a dangerous situation. For example, Elie is questioning his religious faith because he doesn’t understand how God could let the Jews endure this cruelty and death. His trust in God is dwindling, and the only thing that is giving him the strength to survive is his faith in his father and his faith in himself. Elie also doesn’t pray or participate in his fasting for Yom Kippur to rebel against God because he doesn’t think that God is helping the people in the concentration camps.

Wanetta O: The strongest bonds that people have with others are those that are developed through time and trust. Building a relationship with someone can strengthen your bond with them and can make that bond unbreakable. Some bonds are incredibly strong, but I don’t think that any bonds are unbreakable. The emotional bond that you have with members of your family can be broken in extreme circumstances, but the blood bond you have with them will always tie you together. In Night, Elie’s bond with his father is unbreakable, as well as the bonds that he has with the people in the concentration camp. This is because they will forever be linked to this tragic event even after they are liberated. Elie’s bond with his father is the only thing keeping him going, and his father is the only thing keeping him alive. Elie and his father are using the hope that they will make it out of this camp together to keep them strong.

I think there is a difference between religious faith and personal faith. in my opinion, personal faith is when you believe you can do or accomplish something by yourself. Religious faith is when you believe in a higher power or godlike entity. Having blind faith is believing very strongly and powerfully. Your faith never wavers and you think that everything happens for a reason. Something that would cause you to lose faith is being put in a horrible or painful situation. Elie is put into a prison camp with no freedom in sight. This causes Elie to lose faith because he can't understand why he is put in this situation. he witnesses terrible things and it treated like trash. Elie doesn't think he deserves to be treated in this way and loses faith.

I think people display power to show authority and so they can be shown respect. I also think some people are so power-hungry that they will do whatever necessary to get power. In Night, the Kapos and other guards beat up the prisoners if they don't work fast enough or sometimes for no reason at all. This establishes fear inside the prisoners to ensure that they won't rebel. When Eliezer first got to the camp soldiers were there to beat them up for not getting off the train fast enough. In just the few seconds they were there, the Nazis had already established dominance and authority. 🤬 also has power over everyone in Germany because everyone has a constant threat over their head in which they could be sent to a concentration camp even if they aren't Jewish. Anyone who does anything disloyal will pay the price. In the modern world, government officials hold power over the people to make sure they follow laws. It also appears in families, because mothers and fathers are in charge of their children. Also in workplaces employees have bosses that they have to report to. In order for things to run smoothly it helps to have someone in charge that oversees the operations.

In the grand scheme of things, I think there is a balance between selfishness and being caring. When you put people in the conditions like that of the Holocaust you see people's natural reaction. When being picked for the natural selection everyone was only worried about themselves, from what we see, but Elie and his father have always looked out for each other. When he learned that the prisoners would be moved but the ones in the infirmary could stay he chose to go with his father so they would be together. An example of selfishness in the book is when the Jews are on their way to the concentration camp and Madame Schächter wouldn't stop screaming because the others on the train terribly beat her up and tied her up multiple times. In situations like this when people's' lives are on the line, I think most people would only be looking out for themselves.
