In the same sense, what better approach to understanding Experience Economy than through a crash course on economic history, by taking a look at the evolution of the "BIRTHDAY CAKE"

"As a vestige of the agrarian economy, mothers made birthday cakes from scratch, mixing farm commodities (flour, sugar, butter and eggs) that together cost mere dimes. As the goods-based industrial economy advanced, moms paid a dollar or two for brands such as Betty Crocker for pre-mixed ingredients from which they baked. Later, when the service economy took hold, busy parents ordered already-baked cakes from the bakery or grocery store, which, at US$10 or $20, cost ten times as much as the packaged ingredients. In today's experience economy, parents less and less make the birthday cake - or even through a birthday party. Instead, they pay an admission fee of $100 or more to "outsource" the entire event to a Chuck E Cheese's, McDonald's, museum, farm or some other business that stages a memorable event for kids - and often throws in the cake for free." (Pine and Gilmore, 2013. p. 31)
